Is there any downside in replacing the pommel and cantle on a treeless saddle? What have you used?

Which type of saddle do you have?

If it is the Barefoot/Trekker type where the pommel and cantle sit inside a zipped pocked then, yes, you can remove these and subsitute for something else. Some examples might be, stiff foam, old socks packed tightly, straw...!

I would be careful of doing this though unless your horse is very round. Where you have withers and/or a prominant spine to consider, you will be better off keeping the insert in place.

Hope that helps?

My pony is a circular fell. I have zipped pockets for the inserts.

Well, definitely worth trying without the inserts then. Depending on what issues (if any) you are having with the saddle - I'd start by taking out the rear/cantle insert. Practice packing this out first and seeing the effect that it has on the whole saddle before trying the front one.

Hope that helps?

I have done that with out Torsion (zipped pockets) and I used wool (wool roving) and stuffed it pretty tight.
