Posting this on behalf of a friend who keeps her mare at my farm.

Normally has new shoes every 12-14 weeks with a refit inbetween times.

She had a new set about 2-3 weeks ago (has road studs in as she's a driving pony), and has become unrideable because she's slipping around so much on the road.

When we've had a look at her shoes, they are super shiny with a mirror like finish as though they have been polished!

Has this happened to anyone else? I was thinking it might be something to do with the mud acting like polish. Her owner thinks that maybe farrier has made shoes out of a different metal this time?

My horse is stabled and gets shod around every 6-7 weeks and has a new set every time because she wears hers right down (we do many many miles :p ) but they never go shiney like that.

Snap. Same thing has happened to mine. Like your horse, Caramac is shod every 6 weeks new set every time, but due to bad weather hes not done so much work recently so had a refit 4 weeks ago. Everything was fine the 1st week but now its like riding on glass [especialy downhill] also have road nails in but this making no difference. The shoes themselves look as if polished, I have never had a refit before so assumed this was normal, but am finding the slipping so unnerving am having farrier out this week[2 weeks early] to put on new set. Cant answer your question but it puts my mind at rest I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my horse.

Is Caramac living out?

We were wondering if that was the difference - mine lives in and her shoes are fine, Kip lives out and has the super slippery version from the same farrier.

Is she shod with flat driving shoes?

I HATE THEM WITH A PASSION! I made the mistake years ago of letting my farrier put driving shoes on my driving horse, Skate???? SKATE? Torville and Dean would have been proud of us! Never again!

I go with concave Fullered ones with road studs. You could try th trick with putting weld with carbide grains in them, that stops you slipping.
