Hi there all,am after your expertise!!

I have decided I 'might' want to take my youngster to some shows this year.I haven't even been to a show since I was a kid,so really need some info!!

I have almost 2 year old highland x cob filly. Not registered in any way (was thinking of getting her overstamped by the highland pony society, but not sure this would make a difference anyway??).What type of shows can I enter her in??,and what classes can I take her in?? (if any!!)

I really just want to get her out for the experience of large busy places, and was hoping it might be a fun family day out that my kids might enjoy as well.

Thanx in advance:)

How big is she? And do you have any photos?

The classes you might be most interested in are youngstock classes (often all are put in together, but might be devided by age, type or height), best conditioned, part bred and novelty classes (like prettiest mare, best mane/tail etc). Depending on her type (what she looks like) she may be suitable for inhand cob or hunter classess too.

If you don't have any papers for her at all, she won't be able to be overstamped unless her parentage can be proven (often through DNA tests if you know the name of her Highland parent), if you were able to do this she'd be added to the part bred register which means you'd be able to compete in part bred mountain and moorland classes where they ask for registration details. This is unlikely to benifit you too much, but it could be worth a ring to the Highland Pony Society to get full details or what it involves and whether they have any special schemes for part breds.

Thanx for that glider. These are only pics I have on pc at the mo.They were taken last summer when I first got her.She has filled out a bit now (although not loads as is still fairly narrow looking and leggy) and lost a bit of the 'babyness' look. She is about 13.3hh in height, just.Am not sure if looks more cob or highland really. Her colouring makes her look highland, but I think her face is quite cobby.

Not sure about the overstamping thing. Can get exact details of parentage from breeder, would that not be enough for breed society?? or does it have to be DNA test?? Guess I should ring them and ask.

Any more ideas for the shows I can enter, and details of ages for youngstock classes would be great,is there an upper age limit?? (she will be 2 this year)

She looks lovely, though it's difficult to tell what type she is without a side on photo, probably a hunter type, especially with her size.

Youngstock classes go up to 3 year olds. Their age is taken as their age at the end of that year. So if her 3rd birthday is in June (for example) she'd be in 3 year old classes for the whole year and wouldn't be able to do youngstock classes next year. Different shows vary as to how they split classes so it's worth just looking at the specific schedules where you want to go. You'd show her plaited and trimmed if she's a hunter type or part bred mountain and moorland.

If she has a covering certificate you may be able to get her registered straight away, it depends on the society, but most insist that registrations are done within a certain time after birth or that you get a DNA test, as otherwise people could be registering horses inaccurately. It's definately worth phoning the society and seeing what they reccomend.

she is very cute! hard to give class advice on those pics though, as they;ren ot a good angle for seeing her build. however, all-purpose youngstock si always a good one, as is partbred M&M. if you just want miles on the clock and life experience, then there is always best turned out, prettiest mare, etc etc.

as said above, check the schedules every show - you can always post for advice as to what she would be suited for.

Thanks for that, very helpful advice, gives me some idea what sort of classes to look for.

As she 2 this coming april then,I am assuming she could enter youngstock this year and until the end of next year??

I will try and get some new pics asap, with side views etc. Will update this thread or start a new one,and if you guys wouldn't mind checking it out and letting me know your opinion I that would be great.

One last question (sorry, but you all know so much more than me about this kind of stuff!!) Do I need to plait and primp her for youngstock and m&m classes,or are they au natural. She has a lovely mane but would be a nightmare to plait I should think!!

Thanx again for all your help:)

She is really lovely! I would say general youngstock classes. Also she looks more like a hunter type so you could perhaps do some potensial hunter pony classes!
As she is a lovely colour too you could show her in the colour classes for duns!

good luck showing, she is lovely!:)

Yes, you can show her this year (in 2 year old or mixed age classes) and next year (in 3 year old or mixed age classes). Because she's only part bred m&m you should plait her mane and plait or pull her tail and shorten it. It might take a bit of time to get the plaits right, but it can be done, even with a very thich mane!
