Argghh what to do about rugs?

My youngster is out 24/7, not clipped but has been rugged up so has a fairly thin coat at the moment- although he is a nice chunky cob and is about the right weight.

Just don't know what to do about rugs as at the moment it is pretty cold at night, near freezing point hear but getting up to 12 degrees c or so in the daytime and now that the wind has dropped it is quite warm. At the moment I have a bit of annual leave from work so have been able to take his rug off during the day and put it back on at night when it is cold. But... i have to go back to work next week and the weather is meant to get a bit hotter like 16 degrees. I leave so early in the morning for work so don't really have time to go find a horse in the dark in a 17 acre field but i don't want him to roast during the day.

Do you think he would be ok if i took his rug off completely or would he totally freeze overnight? I don't want to be a cruel mummy and roast him but then i don't want to freeze him either!!!!!

What do i do? (Sorry very overprotective first mummy!!!!)

How about a light or summer turnout, so he won't get too hot during the day and not dramatically cold during the night.

true - and horses are very good at adapting to temperature changes, especially when living out 24/7.
forage is excellent for keeping him warm, so you could just chuck a load of hay over the fence!
