I *finally* worked up the courage to ask Debbie if I could show Bonanza. She's like, okay, sure, May 25. That was easier than I thought! So I'm entering pony in the Western walk, jog class. It's ****** Fun Show so there will surely be a friendly audience! Now al I have to do is get pony to neck rein consistantly, slow down her trot to a jog, make her pull her head in, make her transitions (and mine) neater, and get her turns sorted out. That's all, oh yes and get myself ready. :D I can't wait, this should be a lot o fun! :D :)

Oh! how exciting. I saw a Western display at the weekend, I was amazed (and a little confused) at just how slow the walk and jog needs to be.

The commentator went on to explain the reason why, (for anyone like myself who didn't know - its so that you can quietly ride among a herd of cattle without spooking them) which makes alot of sense, its easy to forget that many horses work for a living, btw I must have a quiet chat with Breeze ;)

A friend who breeds QH's is trying to coax me into taking Breeze to a show, I'd love too and probably will eventually, but I think I'll go as a spectator first, my knowledge of what's expected in western classes is zilch, so between us Breeze and I are greener than grass:D

Good luck with the show, they look great fun. I look forward to reading all about it.

Actually, ranch horses working with cattle never move nearly as slowly as the pleasure horses you see in the ring. AQHA has a new class called Ranch Horse Versatility. If you watch the pleasure phase of that, you will see that the horses move much faster than in regular western pleasure. The horses in these classes are real ranch horses who work with cattle everday, and I doubt one of them jogged like a show horse. I don't really know where the slow jog came from though.

The slow jog we use in the show ring is there because being non-gaited, the QH's trot is pretty bouncy to sit to. I mean, it's not as slow as it sounds, but it is somewhat slower because the horse has to be so collected. Am I explaining this clearly enough? I didn't know about tht new class meEllie, sounds interesting, doubt we'll see it at this show tho. :)

The class is relatively new, I think it started this year. As far as I know it is only at AQHA shows. I saw it on America's Horse. I don't know about you, but I rode QH's for the first 10 that I had been riding, exclusively for the first five. All of their jogs, have been the super slow thing that you see at World's. I absolutely loved it. So comfy. :D I was always taught, that unless the judge asks for an extended jog, that it should be this slow. More judges are asking you to extend the gait, but some people just ignore the request. I think that it is kind of silly.

BTW, good luck at your show.
