View Full Version : Should we buy more beet?

I've used up the last of our sugar beet today. We've got 2 ponies, one a shetland, and they just get a little bit each -- consequently, a sack lasts forever. We only feed it in the winter.

I looked in the sack last week and thought, no point getting any more, it's spring now. But as my frozen little hands struggled with soaking the last of it today, I thought maybe I should reconsider!

Two questions:
1) Is everyone else still feeding it (if you stop in summer) and if so, when will you stop?
2) How long does it keep (dry, in the bag)?

Depending on your answers, we may or may not pick up another bag tomorrow. Thanks.

Going on the fact that Joy isn't eating the third of a ration I have cut down to I have stopped feeding her extra now the last of the soaked batch has been used.

I too will be interested to see how long it keeps for mind you its so cheap it's no great shakes if it goes off as I have so little left. :)

Nah! Stop when you get to the end of the bag. Spring is on its way and you don't want them to get too fat when the grass comes in.

Also, it is good for them to lose a bit before the green green grass appears.

Nothing worse than laminitis!

Woody the nf was the only one with us on beet this winter and he stopped a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn't bother replacing it, especially with poneos :)

I intend to keep feeding speedibeet over the summer but more because Dolly's meals will be so tiny that without it I won't be able to hide her supplements.

Thanks guys, that's settled then -- no more beet for us.
