I have never know a horse to have shoes on before about 3/4 for general use because thats when they start getting ridden, but does that mean a young horse has to have a barefoot trimmer or will a regular rasp and trim be ok?

Im saying this because my boy had his feet trimmed and i personally thought they looked over grown but when the farrier came he only took a small bit off  And they have a dodgy look to them, they look kind of flat at the front and long

Could it be that i just need a different farrier, don't get my wrong this guys heart is in the right place and he is reliable but im not convinced he is doing his job properly.

If you're concerned you either need to talk it over with your existing farrier or try a new one. You don't necessarily need a barefoot trimmer, a good farrier should do if you can find one.

It's very important to ensure that a young horse has good hoof care and access to as many different surfaces as possible in order to build the best hoof as possible. If you can do this it will stand your horse in good stead for it's entire life.
