Having looked into and asked about Parelli, im now asking about John Lyons! He seems to be highly recommended by many people. I have seen some books on his site and am interested in getting one. Have any of you got his books? The set I have seen is the ground control manual and the riding manual combo with the DVD to back it up. It looks to me to be a similar thing to the Parelli pack. I have decided to get the Parelli level 1 but want to have other ideas too so am considering the Lyons one too. At $300 the set I would like some opinions first though!

I quite like his magazine - I don't have any of his books mind you. But I find him open minded and progressive, his magazine goes into things such as the advantages of clicker training, diet health and other great articles. He is very down to earth and realistic in the articles I have read by him. Very positive and drills to the root of the problems effectively.

I have all his books and the ground control manual. He is one of my favourite horse trainers. If you are not familiar with his techniques...then some of his books may be hard for you to comprehend until you get a handle on things.( that's my opinion anyway) You might look into buying some of his DVDs and tapes on e bay...and maybe some of his earlier "perfect horse " magazines .You can get these things really cheap on e bay. If you like what you read and hear...then invest in the other stuff you need.:)

I have John Lyons, Communicating With Cues: The Riders Guide to Training and Problem Solving, Parts I,II and III. Introduction Maureen Gallatin. Greenwich CT: Belvoir Publications.
It is three volumes. It has become quite a classic. It has black and white illustrations.Sometimes he discusses things that he has tried and then given up - and the reasons - like going bitless and then returning to using a bit. And he may have changed further since he published it.
I bought it over the internet from the States from a bookseller, and not from Lyons own website. I noticed that some part of his later books may be contributed by other people, as he did a lot of magazine articles, etc.
I dont have a horse and this is not a course on how to train a new horse, but it is central to my horse riding library and one I would not be without.

I got his magazine for about four years and found it very helpful with a difficult horse. I still use his methods with my youngster.
I bought the VHS tapes but they were betamax so I had to have them converted but watching them helped me to understand his one rein communication. Bright Zip was trained to a high level using these methods. I found them easier and more logical than parelli.
