View Full Version : A Book Club!

How about a Book Club Section.
So often when I read a book I'd like to discuss what I read or share things that really made an impact on me.
How about we get a section for a book club.
Looking at the other thread about 'must have' books I think there should be a few ground rules though. Like for example if you participate in a discussion on a specific book you must have read it. :D You yourself. No second-hand knowledge, no general : 'I hate soandso' etc.
Of course it's okay to not like the book, disagree with the author, find the writing style boring, etc. All kinds of feedback would be welcome. As long as you actually read it and contribute something to the discussion rather than just slam it.
Would anybody be interested?

Book club is an excellent idea - I am always buying new books and looking for good ones to try which have practical ideas in them that anyone can do!:)

you leave a book that you have enjoyed somewhere for someone else to read. Then you use a hotmail account or similar for them to post their thoughts comments. its done with fiction books usually. Its great to see how far they can travel. :D
You leave a message inside with contact details and encourage person to also "drop" book when they are thru with it!:p :p
If its horse books then why not leave them at a show, tack room,RS etc
Have fun dropping!:D :D

We have a book exchange thing going on here in Korea with other expats. It's really popular as English books are quite expensive to buy.
I'm for the book club idea, I suggested a book recommendation forum a while ago. :)

Oh see as a book club it would take the recommendation thing even a step further. We'd decide on a book and then whoever wants to participate gets the book and we read and discuss it. Not just as a recommendation to others but also to discuss perhaps each chapter and what it means to us or quotes or writing style, etc. So it might end up as a book recommendation for others but the main purpose would be to read a book together as a group and talk to each other about it.

Good idea, depends on the availability of the books of course. The USA and the UK have a much wider selection of books than New Zealand, Australia etc, and probably much more reasonably priced.
Very good idea in general though. See what Mike and the other moderators say.

I love the idea, I've wanted to read some fiction horse books, I was thinking of asking here. I love to read, I read quite a bit of non-horsey books, and of course some horsey non-fiction books.

In the interm, while books are being shipped etc. We could select Online articles for discussion point. This would allow those who are financialy strapped to participate in a constructive way with no cost as well as open up the field of VAST resources that exist for free.

Must have missed that. I didn't see anything and figured StormArion was your little sidekick. :p
But yes. Lots of free resources. For example I have a subscription to The Horse Magazine (http://www.thehorse.com)(US) but as far as I know you can access their articles for free online. I've found them to be a very up-to-date and credible source of information.
No problem with discussing different views but I'd rather not put off the mods by causing discontent on purpose. :)

I'd say we would simply have a 'Book Club' Subforum (maybe under General?).
Then one person suggests a book by putting author and title in the thread title. The person suggesting the book should also put a little description up to let others decide if they want to get this book or perhaps already have it.
Then maybe give everybody a couple of weeks to get it/read the first chapter and start discussing things?
Same with Shadowlark's articles. Just put author/source and title in the Thread title and for online articles put the link in the introductory post.
Or do you have other suggestions?
Here's an example:
Mary Wanless - Ride With Your Mind Essentials
Paperback (http://www.amazon.com/Ride-Your-Mind-Essentials-Innovative/dp/1570762449/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-3466769-3474252?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175291259&sr=8-1) - new for US $17.21 or used through Amazon for as low as US $4.50.
This book promises innovative learning strategies for basic riding skills. It has 14 relatively short chapters. Each chapter is divided into:
Description of the Ideal
Common Starting Points
The Fix
Troubleshooting Now
Troubleshooting on through time
Test yourself- have you got it?
Off-horse exercises
Please vote in the attached poll if you would like to participate in this book discussion
What do you think?

I'm not even sure you would need a poll. If we just had a little section somewhere, people could start a thread about a particular book, and other people could add their thoughts as and when they felt like it ? It would just work like all the other forums and would be a useful reference section.
Say, for example, I might start a thread on Clinton Anderson's book and how it's so great at teaching the one-rein-stop, and then one other person might reply... and then I'd add 158 more comments ... and then a year later one other person might reply .... :p
( Ok, I'm being silly, Sorry. Of course, even if nobody else did, I'm sure JuliaGulia and ShadowL would also comment on it :) )
But seriously, just a space for people to start threads about books they'd enjoyed or found useful ... there's a current thread about Linda T-Jones at the moment in Natural Horsemanship, I'm sure there's a bunch of other books people would be interested in discussing. Personally, I would find it very useful to read other people's comments, good or bad, on the available literature, what works for them and what doesn't.
Of course, I'm biased since I have an awful lot of books, of which most are pretty useless and a few of them are absolutely stunning.
(like for example, Clinton Anderson's and Kate Farmer's ;) )

Hm, yes. Perhaps that should be a different thread? LOL
Just in case the database errors indicate that NR has reached it's server's limits and new forums would overload it I thought about taking it on to a different server. Kind of like Emma did with the Member Photos, remember?
We could link from NR to the book forum:

Would that be preferable?

That's probably the best way of doing it actually - then it's not putting extra pressure on the mods on here and if people don't want to have anything to do with it they don't have to.

I really like the idea of all reading together.
I think what some others are thinking of are book recommendations.
I think Karin is saying we all read together each chapter, and come back and discuss it.
The poll would be nescessiary because we would need to decide on what book we would read as a group!

Could it not be a few books at once? Then if the chosen book didn't appeal to someone they could participate in another discussion? Maybe if youve just read a book that you really enjoyed or wanted to talk about you could start a thread about it, so it would be a reccommendation (sp?) aswell as everyone being able to read together. Or have two sub forums one where everyone reads chapter one then goes and discusses it;then reads Ch.2 and discusses it etc. and another sub forum where you can just talk about books you're reading at the moment you think are really good.
That doesn't really make what I mean clear does it? :p

Yes, absolutely!!! Gracie got it right in regards to the differences between a review and a discussion. I only posted the poll to see if there was a minimum amount of people (3 or 4) interested in this particular book. That doesn't mean there couldn't be several discussions going on at the same time. I just don't want to have a monolog! ;)

Great link. I didn't know it was there but I guess that's where you and Kate Wooten will find the book reviews.

Anything horse related is fine. All you need is a few people that want to read the same book - fiction or non-fiction doesn't matter.
