Don't know the answer to your question, sorry... but are Arabs actually shown with chain nosebands? Seems a bit... harsh... when so many say how tractable and trainable they are (and certainly the ones I've known have been).

hi, as far as i know you can't. the purpose of the fine in-hand "bridles" is to show off their features which the traditional stuff doesn't.
this is just what i think so i appologise in advance if somebody corrects me:D

Only in specialist classes I think.
As for the chain thing - arabs are generally shown on a long rein, so I wouldn't have thought it'd come into play.

it's very pretty, but i wouldn't use it in a normal inhand class, only for display.
aren't you meant to waft arabs round on the very end of a long line with no contact anyway? i'd guess the chain noseband is a bit like the curb bits in western riding.

hehe waft...yep if thats what you call it!! as you know or may not know , i have an arab and showed her alittle last year just in a normal bridle (er yeah we came last every time:o )but any way the others in the ring had the normal rolled bridles massive whips and er as mehitabel puts so well wafted there horses round the ring on the end of the lead rope and when the horse got infront of them they yanked it back! ! i was a little er horrified really they just looked out of control(not that i was she gets little bees in her bonnet and ploughs off sometimes and others im dragging her round the ring i dont think were cut out for inhand showing:rolleyes: )

Makes sense. :) Have to admit I haven't really seen many Arab classes :o :D That chain just looked a bit like overkill to me!
I have, however, asked my RI, who showed and bred Arabs for many many years (still shows one of hers now, primarily in ridden classes now though) and she said go for rolled leather halters, not the traditional dress stuff. Traditional Arab halters are beautiful, but not used for the showring. She said some do show with blingy leather halters (rolled leather with pretty crystal or metal decoration) but hers is still shown in plain rolled Arab halter and has done consistently well in that.

i think this site is a good example of showing arabs. i love it and you can probably guess why i was attracted to it in the first place:p

you would only show in this stuff in a traditional costume class. as for the chain. arabs are not to be shown in a bridle with a chain that is over the nose and conected to the lead. however, you can use a chain under the chin and attached to the lead if you have a horse that needs the extra control. if a trditional bridle has a chain there should be enough slack in it so that it never comes into play. but the problem with this is that novices sometimes get the fitting wrong and it sits too far down the nose.
as for us, we show odin in a fine bradoon that is colour stitched down the sides, a nylon bit with a nylon strap to the lead. the mares have fine leather inhand bridles with a little gold decoration, with a leather strap to the lead (this is also used for the youngsters) and sol (cas silver phoenix) has a cable bradoon with silver down the sides, the same nylon strap as odin and the lead. you can see this on our site on sol's page. you will also see odin's bridle on sol when he was younger.
as for wafting then round on the end of the lead. well i think that they should be trained to trot out on the end of the lead for inhand (again you can see sol in action doing this on his page) showing. however, it should be done with command and done correctly. having said this though, odin moves like a train and we have yet to find anyone that can keep up with him. when i show him i have to turn him in a circle and set off before he does. through his natural movement he will overtake me and be in front before we reach the turn. we have tried everything and there just is no other way to show his movement to the full. howvever he is never pulled back and comes back to command
