After Dawn had her shoes off again last october we haven't been able to get hold of a farrier.
so my horse had gone over 5 months  without a farrier.

So i took photos before he came and after. please say if you think there is somehting wrong with the trim but i was just so pleased to get them neatened a bit.

It's hard to comment because there is a limit to how much can be done in 1 trim and after 5 months without being touched it looks like there's a lot to do. This is a case where you have to suck it and see a bit really, I'd let the farrier do another trim (preferably in 4-5 weeks) and then re-post pics if you still want opinions.

To me it definitely looks like there is more that can be done and I would want him coming out regularly to begin with until they are sorted out. IMO 12 weeks is too long.

twelve weeks is quite a long time when there is a lot of damage to be repaired Bebe is correct I would have said a maximum of 8 weeks really looking at them

12 weeks is definitely much too long, see if you can get him back sooner (and if he refuses find someone else as it doesn't bode well for the future if that's the case).

Can't see the piccies (work blocks them) :(

But I have to agree with everyone else, 12 weeks is far too long whether the horse is shod or not and most certainly if there are some issues to resolve.

When Saff first went barefoot she was trimmed every 4-5 weeks. She can go a little longer now but certainly coming into the summer she needs doing every 6 weeks at the very most. I'd say that 8 weeks is THE maximum that any horse should go without a trim (am including balancing the foot as a given).

well after the shoes were taken off (this is last october) the farrier who took them off came out to trim the feet (8 weeks after the shoes were off) and there was nothing to come off. both of my horses feet grow at a really slow rate even with spring coming on and i wouldn't be surprised if their feet don't change shape by the next time he comes out. or they'll have only changed slightly.

This in itself would worry me to be honest.

From the pics there's a lot of reshaping work that could be done to improve the hooves. This is where a lot of pasture trims fall short, they take off height but don't work to rectify other problems and as a result the hooves never improve.

I personally wouldn't be too happy with the job that's been done but would cut the farrier some slack because of how long has gone between trims. If the next trim isn't noticeably better I'd look elsewhere.

i would love to have the option of looking elsewhere but i must add, there are too many horses in this area for farriers. this one came from down south thinking there wouldn't be much work. he has over 130 horses on his books in one week and people are ringing him up from all over the place. most farriers won't come to my area or have no time :( There is only one other farrier i know would come out but he made my mare very lame by only trimming the bottom. her feet became very flat and i'm sure this gave her leg problems. I rode her yesterday and there was a noticeable difference in how balanced she was after having the trim so there is some (maybe only a little but..) improvement.

Can I suggest that you ask your farrier to train you to manage your horses feet if he feels they could do with the extra attention, a few farriers my way will do that to help people out
