I always thought clips were simply to keep the shoe on better/longer if a horse was prone to losing them. When my horse was still shod, farrier advised against them as she thought they would just take off more hoofwall in case the horse did tear off a shoe. It was less damage if it just lost the shoe (without clips)

Yeh quarter clips are used, when the horse is prone to pulling off or loosing shoes, the quarter clips add more security.

Can be because the toes are a bit long, using quarter clips instead of a toe clip lets the farrier set the shoes back a bit.

Some farriers also use them in an attempt to hold the hoof together under the mistaken belief that this will work. It doesn't, the flare causing the hoof to spread needs to be addressed.

mine has them for exactly that reason, he needs his toes set back as his heels are low to make sure the heel, pastern axis is correct :)
They 'dump' the toe also with mine to reduce the breakover :)

I do not know the reasons, but I know of a local riding school who always fit quater clips on the front.

petal has them at the minute, but not as a regular thing i hope. my god of shoeing retired, and the replacement managed to butcher her hooves in only a couple of shoeings, so new farrier has some work to do. she was getting a gap at the front of her hoof that looked WLDish, but they are looking much better now already.

When Bo was shod he sometimes had quarter clips, his toes get very long which makes him trip, so the shoe being set back and the toe being squarerd off/taken back further helped prevent this - he also was not prone to loosing shoes, very very rarely.

I've heard that in showing horses, quarter clips at the front make it harder to see any irregularity in the movement (eg dishing) as theres no spot, the toe clip, to focus on.

Sometimes I put quarter clipped shoes on Piggy Prokers front feet.
He is hard on his shoes and he is also a very sharp mover. The shearing forcesPiggy can put on his front shoes are tremendous. having the quarter clips help with the shearing forces he put on his fronts.
Why not ask him why he prefers quarter clips on the front shoes?

We have quarter clips on the fronts of ours as it makes it easier for the farrier to roll the toes.
Personally I'm not a fan of single front toe clips as they put a lot of pressure on that one area - the very tip of the pedal bone isn't somewhere I want a load of force going. Best case scenario for me is no toe clips at all but quarter clips is an OK second best.

A good shoe shouldn't put pressure on the pedal bone. It's too tight if it is.
You can actually cause errosion of the pedal bone by constantly shoeing too tight with a toe clip.
