Does anyone have a recommendation for a horse shampoo? I have heard hte Cowboy Magic range is good but dont want to pay for it, it is a bit expensive, only to discover it isnt that good. He is a Fleabitten Grey horse, so any whitening shampoos would also be useful.

Thanks

Jen

I can't help with suggesting a horse shampoo but I'd recommend you try Johnsons baby shampoo.

I use it on my three horses and it's as good as any branded horse shampoo I've ever tried....plus it doesn't sting or irritate them if it accidently goes in their eyes. :)

Cowboy Magic was going to be my recommendation- love it!

I used to use Johnson's baby on my old cob, it was good because it never irritated him but his feathers looked a bit mouldy compared to some of the other horses we saw at shows! I might try the cowboy stuff for P's tail, it's the colour of poo at the moment & we're planning to go to a show on Saturday...

Cowboy Magic are pretty good (the green spot remover is excellent) but I just use Lush stuff, cheap enough and smells divine! The Daddy-O (purple one for grey hair) works as well as any of the horsey ones that I've tried :)

I use LUSH Licorice shampoo and conditioning bar. its fabulous darling, luxorious, brings the coat up beautifully clean and soft, easier because its a bar and lasts forever. Ohh yes, and just as Baymares LUSH choice - its smells devine :)

Edited to say: I told them in Lush that it brings a horse up beautifully. Despite their young, hip, slightly querky image, the response to this feedback was just a funny look!! Honestly, non horsey people .... !

Tescos value citrus, smells lovely and only 58p for a great big bottle.

They're used to me in our local store and always ask if it's for me or the horse! They know all about her (poor things) ... well, they do ask :D

Must try that soap bar, which one is it again?

I am a cheap bugger..
Palmolive dish soap :) Works like a charm, one step as it conditions very nicely I mix it with water so that it will rinse easily. For grass Stains I use Sunlight detergent spot remover bar.

I use this stuff day to day Fly Away (http://www.flyaway.ltd.uk/acatalog/Online_Store_Grooming_Products_2.html) it is great, gives a real shine to a dark coat and bring whites up amazingly (horse with 4 white socks  ) and it also helps to keep the bugs off...and its cheap :D I think I have the colour enhancing one and thats great on whites, so the Ultra White must be incredible :p
I do also love Cowboy Magic, fantastic stuff but expensive, I just get the mane & tail detangler gel for my long manes :D

I've bought this whitening stuff for Skye... it's purple but can't remember for the life of me what's it's called. I'm pretty sure it starts with s. It's $15 over here for a small bottle and works a treat on manes and tails especially. Showglo? Oh i have no idea.

I think I own just about every type of shampoo for my horse and they all have their individual uses. I actually won a lot of shampoo at various shows, so I have been able to try a bunch of things out. It also means people in the barn come to me if they want bathing advice :D Everyone knows I can get a horse whiter than anyone else in the barn :p

I love using a baby shampoo because its just so gentle and very cheap (I buy mine at the Dollar store). I use this when I don't particularly care about getting her super clean.

I love my Mane and Tails shampoo. I use this when I want Dolly to be semi-presentable, but I don't need her show clean.

I love my Dawn Dish soap because it gets Dolly's whites whiter than any horse shampoo I have ever used. It's great for getting her show white.

And finally, my absolute favourite shampoo of all after trying out just about every shampoo on the market is... Lucky Braids shampoo. It's absolutely fabulous and well worth every penny I spend on it. It rinses so fast and it leaves Dolly's coat feeling absolutely wonderful. It doesn't dry the coat out like some shampoos can do. This is the shampoo I will be sticking with (once all of the other shampoos eventually run out!).
