It's a type class for a completely different type to Bry I'm afraid. Think overgrown spindly legged show pony.

And now someone with experience of showing plaiteds will come and give you a proper, but not necessarily better, description. ;)

In the UK there are 2 hack classes, small (14.2hh-15.1hh) and large (15.1hh-15.3hh). They are the type of horse that origionally were used for well off men to "hack" round the park or "hack" to the hunt meet, where they would change on to their hunter for the hunt. They are elegant and extrememely well mannered, often of throughbred type. They are required to perform a show which can include one handed work, rein backs, halt/walk to canter etc and are ridden by the judge.

There are photos from last year's hack classes at the Horse of the Year show here: http://www.theimagefile.com/?skin=3825&ppwd=cg2864sr&Action=_VC&id=47275

I'm suprised at someone who knows about showing saying that! (said in a half joking way!) That's exactly the type that thankfully is becoming less common, they should be out and out horse, overgrown show ponies don't cut it at top level.

I suppose they can look like overgrown spindley show ponies to the untrained eye, but if you put them next to a show pony, they are very different types.

Ultimately well mannered light well schooled ride. One rider was known to do his entire show one handed while smoothing out his coat tails and finished with a flourish of a colourful hankerchief and load blow of nose!

Show types are definately park hacks, usually TBs or Angloarabs. Covert or hunting hacks are closer to Riding Horses.

Hacks are the horse equivalent of show ponies whilst hunters are the SHPs in horse form.

Sadly we have an ultimate hack BUT 16hh

Sorry to hijack your thread Bobbin!!!

Would Tally be a Ridden Hack? I've wondered what he would be in showing terms!

(He technically is an overgrown show pony, he's English Riding Pony/Welsh :o and about 15hh)

this is a hack - http://rehorses.com/hack_definition.html
the horse in question also sometimes does riding horse for variety, but does better as a hack.

Wow, hacks finish at 15.3hh??? What a bugger. There is no height limits to hacks here in Aust.
Pony Hacks - under 14hh
Galloway Hacks - 14hh - n.e. 15hh
Hacks - 15hh and over.

I am so glad I have my lovely 16.2hh grey TB show hack here in Aust and not the UK.

Just thought I would add how much I am enjoying learning about showing in the UK.

Keep Smiling!!!

Thanks...typical isn't it. I actually found a show that was made for me and Bry (novice showing show with unregistered part breds) and I'm away doing my second ET course.....oh well....

Do you have a photo without the rug on? He looks more like a Show Hunter Pony or Riding Horse type from that photo. How does he move? (eg does he float across the ground, have a lot of knee action etc).

Yep, ignore my hand position in this!

He doesn't have a lot of knee action, but he moves relatively nicely most of the time. I don't really plan to show him (not my thing, I don't have the right gear, and I plan to event him!) but I was just curious!

Looking at that photo he's definately more of a hunter type, hacks are much lighter in frame :)

:D Thank you! I was thinking of possibly doing some show hunter, or RTR jumping at some point! Would he be suitable? He jumps from a nice rhythm into a nice shape
