Just wondering how you go about trimming a section D tail so that it is not banged. I have not trimmed my two year olds tail yet as all the horses I have trimmed before had them banged. As you can imagine it's getting pretty long now!

D tails are switched, so trimmed to end in a point at about mid-cannon or above the fetlock. brush it out, then start snipping the outside edges at about the hocks, and feather it down to a point. it should be between fetlock and mid-cannon when the tail is held up, so aim for just above the fetlock when at rest. go slowly and keep standing back to look, it's quite difficult to do well.

Thanks must admit I am slightly dreading it - thought of just trimming a little to shorten it and then attempt more when I came to either showing or riding him. However I suppose if I mess it up now no one will see so I best get practising!

it takes practice as well, so you can experiment this year if you're not planning on going to parties, and get good and confident at it before he goes out in public!
