Making horse tack

I just wondered if anyone made their own rope halters etc, and if there were any other items of equipment that people make for their horses instead of buying?:)

Erm! yes, I make and repair all our horses' gear, but it's cheating as I am a saddler and worked in some of the big saddlery factories in England!:D

There are some books that give good tips on repairing and making your own things.

We make our own lead ropes. Buy a clip from the hardware store, and take some baling twine (usually very accessable since most bales of hay are tied with them), cut some peices long, equal lengths. Tie the peices the the clip and braid the twine down to the bottom and make a knot. Ta-**! ;) Dye your twine with all sorts of crazy colours for different colours!

I guess if you had the right fabric and pattern, you could make your own saddle pad.

I am working on making rope halter, 22 foot ropes, 12 foot ropes and saddle blankets.

My dad made me some lead ropes. They are just like regular ones. He bought the clips and rope at the hardware store and it ended up costing about $5. Normally, I wouldn't make anything, it's too much of a pain in the butt, but some of the rope colors and patterns were really nice and I couldn't find any lead ropes like that.
