Hi,

I currently feed my 16.1 tb mare pasture mix and Hi-Fi original as this is what she was fed when I got her. Shes getting one round scoop of each twice a day.
Now that we have lighter evenings etc I am riding her 6 days a week giving her one day off and I now compete regulaly at weekends.
I was wondering if I should give her a feed for horses in more work such as alfa a insted of the Hi-fi or a different mix.
Would this mean I could give her smaller quantities? Or if not would it give her extra energy? (which could be helpful when schooling her as I sometimes have trouble keeping her going in canter, not sure if this is linked!)

Any ideas, please help!

Thanks :)

Is she holding her weight on the current feed? does she generally have enough energy for her work?
If the answer to both of those is yes then I would say she is getting enough calories, until that changes there is no need to change the feed.

Personally I would want to consider if the feed you are currently giving her is the best for her, I personally prefer to keep horses on a higher fiber lower starch diet as it is more natural and better (according to current reasearch)for them, though I do understand that it is not suitable for all horses. Choosing something like AlfaA would mean you could reduce the cereals (mix which is starchy) whilst maintaing her current energy intake. also fibre gives a much more even energy compared to cereals and sugars so gives for more continuity in energy levels the horse has.

Thanks Jessey :)

her weight is fine at the mo but shes lost a bit over the last few weeks and so will probably continue to do do and as its going to be another month before decent grass grows I will change her to Alfa A and see how we go :)

Spoke to my instructor about it this morn and she said I could give her a scoop of competition cubes if I'm working her extra hard or competing :)

Thanks :D
