I have learnt that if a horse gets laminitis then rings are shown , they do eventually grow out. What do these rings look like and when do they appear, is it beofre laminitis or after?
I would be very greatful for any help

I'm not sure about the rings but your farrier will probably be able to give you some information, ours is quite helpful when it comes to laminitis. :)

Thats the thing, farrier came out today and after rasping her feet, i then noticed the rings, she is slightly lame but u put it down to having shoes done and being sore footed, and when i went tp to check on her later on fer feet were amazingly hot, i am putting 2 and 2 together and scaring myself thats the problem  :D She is probably just sore footed from farrier
pfffft i do worry to much :D

Is she usualy sore footed after a farrier visit? Could your farrier have taken too much off her feet maybe?

Before you panic though, has your horse recently changed grazing paddock??? Because you can get rings from dhange of paddock..

If the rings are perfectly straight all the way around the hoof then chances are they are grass rings,if they are wavy and uneven lines that is a sign of a previous lami attack.Grass rings occur due to change in horses diet or grazing and are usually noticed several months after this change.

They are relatively straight, thanks for that, yeh i believe now that it is simply just foot sore, she will be as right as rain tomorro and pulling me round after the geldings
Horses have this very good talent at worrying you

I know of 2 ponies that showed signs of grass change rings within days and weeks of moving....Are you sure it takes several months to show??

I have to say the rings are still baffling me a little, simple because she hasnt changed paddocks for at least a year maybe 2, we have one large paddock and manage it all year round, but they are straight lines unlike those pictures so im not too concerned now

Illness can also cause rings on the hoof - just like if humans are ill, they often get ridges on their fingernails. I think it's because the body has to devote a lot of resources to fighting infection etc., so diverts some away from growth etc.

Thst interesting shes been ill now for about a month and a half, it was a bacteria infection in her guteral puch. So whether that caused the rings

Rings happen when ever nutrition changes, so even summer to winter grass changes can cause rings, as can illness, box rest, feed change etc etc
Normal rings are even all the way round, lami rings tend to get wider towards the back.
The horses hoof normally takes 9-12 months to grow from top to bottom, it depends a bit on the individual. The main ring (the most obvious one) on the above picture working on that basis is probably about 4-6 months old (working on the basis that it is not quite 1/2 way down the hoof yet) - so that one could well just be where the grass finished growing lots in the autum :p

Echo jessey - rings can occur whenever there's a growth spurt / significant change in rate of hoof growth.

I would completely agree with Jessey on that. They certainly look like grass rings to me.

Grass rings will only appear when there's a change which is to the detriment of the hoof, if the hoof is balanced and healthy you can go from no grass to lots of grass and you won't get grass rings. If the hoof/horse is even slightly unhealthy, you get grass rings. I always look at them as a cause for concern, even if it's just a minor one as it means something in the horse (digestive wise usually) or foot (balance) is out of kilter. My mare currently has 2 small grass rings due to her having a bout of low grade laminitis a few weeks ago. This is a horse that hasn't had any growth rings at all in over 2yrs despite many changes to the grass, etc.

To be honest, the grass rings on that hoof would concern me a lot less than the poor hoof form.

That's a picture of Martini's foot-she's laminitic. As you can see the rings get wider towards the back of the hoof. I wouldn't say the lines on your horse's foot look like they were due to laminitis. As others have already said, they can be caused by various other reasons :)

The toe looks a bit dumped to me.
