My last farrier left Captain far too long....My new farrier has been trimming Captain down carefully yet trying to repair the damage done which showed signs of the heel being too far back. Sorry not very good with making you all understand what I mean. I think the farrier mentioned something about collapsing heel. :o I asked my farrier questions like how has this happened? and how can I help? etc. The farrier is positive that he can correct it and that just by regular trimming Captain will be ok. This time round though I asked again how Captain and his heels are doing. He showed me the split in the heel.

Has anyone else had the same experience? Is there anything else I could be doing?

Thanks Dee. He is ok...He isnt lame or have any issues. I am just making sure that everything I am doing is the best I can do for him. You know what us Mum's are like...:D

The thing is I trusted my farrier as I have no experience. Now I am reading up on it like mad and hoping my new farrier will keep me informed of any problems...:o

Do you mean sheared heels, when you say split heels? If so, you will find loads of web sites about sheared heels if you do a google search. But I am not sure if this is what you are referring to. I think collapsed heels often have something to do with a weak digital cushion among other things.
