After years of owning big 16hh horses (warmbloods and TB's) I've just arranged to buy a 14.2 pony. I am totally in love...it's like my childhood dreams come true :D

A gorgeous white bundle of pony fluff with a long mane, full tail and feathers, she's all horse (more horse than some of the big ones I've had) but in a much cuter package!

I've not ridden a pony since I was a kid, I just got on this one and it was amazing. I just can't explain how good it felt!

Why do you prefer ponies? What is it about them that is so great?

I really dont know, honest! I just love them as well! I think its partly because as a kid i grew up riding them, i learnt on them, and horses just seem too posh and serious for my liking, perhaps im wrong? Ponies are more fun, you get on and muck around...give me a pony any day!

But seriously, i really dont know! I loan a 15.1hh at the moment and he is very pony like, exactly the right height for me as well.

I dunno.... you've got me thinking as I love them too!

I suppose they are fluffy, cute, small, wizzy, bouncy, cheeky little children in a way. They just seem to know no rules and have funny ways of showing you they care! I love them! :)

Plus... half of my RS are ponies. I suppose a lot of horses are too sensitive and hot headed for my liking. At least with ponies you can mess around with them a bit and they wont get themselves worked-up or frustrated.

Still... you've got me thinking!

Are you sure you're still going to love her so much when she's pretending to be a skewbald in the middle of winter because she's just so attached to all the mud? :p:D Sounds likes she'll be a devil of a job to keep clean!

Seriously though, ponies do have something about them that horses don't. I think it's in their mind personally - they just seem to be a bit more independent and have that ability to work it out for themselves - they really don't need humans, it's us needing them!

My pony is just so much FUN!!

I can mess about on her and she never gets fazed and when she gets excited the most she ever does jog.

I raced my friend up through a field yesterday and the other day I went out with a fellow pony and we tried jumping cross country fences as pairs but we kept getting tanked off with. T'was soooo funny, but not very scary as it would have been on a horse.

totally agree! ponies are the best!! my riding instructor swaps my horses/ponies weekly to get a feel for different breeds and sizes and i must admit theres nothing better than a cheeky pony full of character zooming off into the distance while all the big thoroughbred/warmbloods are dancing about the field at object they hadnt noticed before, and if i ever have too dismount im not strugglingg to pull myself back on.gatework no problem! :) :)

Ponies are just fun fun fun :) They are also very naughty! But hey i've got 5 so I must love them :D I feel more confident riding ponies, riding horses is challenging, in a good way, but not really fun. By the time a horse has thought of doing something, a pony has done it!

Also, I have met loads of horses with zero personality, but never met a pony without a huge personailty! (of course some horses are big characters too though)

They are also really cheeky and loving and cheer you up :)

We have a yard full of ponies, they are just adorable and have five pony foals due this year!!!!!!!!! They are clever, mischievous, calculating, naughty, cute, think about things, sort themselves out if they get in a scrape, drive you mad (more often than not!!!) I wouldnt be without them!!!!! My pony stallion is just the best though he is what i would call the nearest thing to perfect in an equine than you can get!!!!!!

I got the chance to ride one of my RI's new ponies a while ago while Sam was waiting for the farrier, he is 14'2, and I had an absolute blast cantering him around the country park, it was so much fun:D

I don't know why it is, maybe because they are so small, but strong at the same time, I feel a lot more in control on a pony than a big horse... I just feel braver around a pony... maybe it's because they're mine!!! ;)

I didn't buy the pony mare in my original post, I bought a gelding instead.

He is a pony too! He is just so much fun, after years of riding my very serious WB I am loving the zest for life that my new pony has. I am a pony convert, you just can't beat them :p

Ah,,,the 100lb question?
Why,, lets see..for me it was super smooth gaits (Icelandics), hardy, easy to care for, would not break the bank in the feeding department..easier to get on and off, small hooves is easier on ones toes......having nice feet so I do not have to shoe....

Glad you are going to be in the ranks of the adults who love their grand pony height equines!
