Welcome to the board Maz.
There are a few other disabled riders on the board and others who help with the RDA.
So pleased you enjoy riding like the rest of us.
Any pics of you and the horses you ride?
We love pics on NR.

Maz I'm so glad that somebody else finds the connection with a horse a truely fulfilling experience.
I'm not disabled myself but I too think that there is nothing else in this world that comes evn remotely close to the relashionship and sense of trust you need to have with an animal that holds your life on its' back :D

Welcome to NR. Im not disabled but I think connections you make with horses are second to none! If you have a real bond with a horse it can be the most amazing feeling in the world. And that feeling stays with you at home when your looking at a piccy of your favourite horse!! ;)

Hi Maz.. so good to hear you love riding. i used to help out with the local RDA, everyone is really friendly. I myself have cerebal palsy, thankfully its very mild but i think it slightly affects me!

Welcome to the bord and everything you have said about connecting I feel when I ride a horse.... although I'm not disabled I know what you mean as horseriding was the only thing which I could be good at due to a foot problem I was born with.
My story is this:
I was born with club feet which means my feet natuarally turn inward and my tendons dont strech (making my heal come off the ground). I had my 1st op at 6 months old I think.... and then had to keep constantly going back for phisio etc. I was in corrective plaster from a day old. Still as I grew my feet curved inwards and although I could walk, my feet always turned inward. In pe lessons when we ran I always got a ten second head start because of my problem yet I still came last and never won and my confidence was always low. I still hate running/racing to this day. I started riding when I was four(ish) as my doctor said it could streach the back of tendons and push my heal down. My mum suggested it.... saying I may prove to be good in it. So I tried it and the feeling of not having to use my feet in the same way as running blew me away (plus I was bitten by the horse bug lol :p) the horse was my legs and my feet worked the same as everyone elses in the saddle and that was it... I was away into riding!
The only op I can remember is the last one I had when I was 7. I was in cast for six months (six months off riding.) and that has "corrected" my foot problems although I'll never have totally "normal" feet and I'll always have scars all over my foot..... but with riding it doesnt matter I use my leg aids in exactly the same way as anyone else does and the riding has streched the back of my tendon (plus my scars are hardly visible) :)
So I do understand you even though I'm not disabled. I'm actually quite good at running now.... I'm a lot faster than some people and my edurance is better than I ever thought it wold be. But with Horseriding, its built my confidence so much that without it I'd probably still be that kid who comes last in races.... now I usually get placed :) I love horseriding I really do its just perfect for me!! :)
Welcome to the bord!

i completely agree with everyone else about the connection with a horse
i have riding lessons so i only get to ride for one hour a week....but for that hour my mind is on nothing but the horse and what im doing...i can completely forget about all my wories and troubles at home
i think thats why i love it so much :)
i did work experience at an RDA centre and its nice to see the effect the horse can have on people
