I'm a 33 year old single mom of a nine year old girl...is it too late for me to make a career of raising horses? I've always loved horses and now that the college here as instituted an Equestrian Science Program I thought of checking it out. It seems that to make a go of the horse industry you must start at a very young age to gain all the knowledge required. I hope not, but I wanted to get some experienced input.

You are never too OLD for horses. The only time you're too old for horses is when you can't move!! Go into a career! If you're an eager learner you'll learn everything you can possibly know! I'm only 14 and have been riding for 5yrs. I say you can never know everything about horses BUT learn everthing you can!

Of course you're not too old!!! Go for it and the best of luck! I have just taken up horse riding/owning at the age of 37 and enjoying every minute of it.
Good luck once again - life's too short to worry about age - it's just a number after all.

If you are serious in taking up a carreer in horse, by all means, go for it. There's no better time than now. You are still young enough to meet the physical challange(and beleive me, it's physical!)and if you have the desire, anything is possible. I started a career in ghorses after I had had 4 children and I've been in the business for the last 10 years. What you need is an honest desire to learn from those around who know. Listen to everything(even if its wrong, you'll learn to recognize that, too)and watch everything. Taking a college course is great, but hands on experience is the best addition to learning at school. If you can get a job(even if it's just one day a week, volunteering) at a barn, in return for cleaning some stalls, there is a wealth of things to learn. Good luck
