Hello!

Has anyone tried to sack out their horse to try to overcome spookiness? What were the results? Did it work?

I used the 'sacking out' method with my horse.
The results have been very good - my horse is much better in traffic when confronted with a scarey bag and has gained much more confidence in jumping coloured fences and cross-country courses.
Although my horse is still a big wimp (bless him!) he is much better around bags and other frightening objects now!

Brilliant! I shall carry on then. glad to see it worked for you and that it doesn't just 'bag-proof' the horse!

bye!

Please could you explain exactly what "sacking out" is.

Thanks

Sacking out is a method used to try to enable a horse to overcome its fears of spooky objects.. It involves getting a large plastic sheet (feed sack) and folding it up really small then stroking the horse all over with it until the horse gets used to it. The sheet is then slowly unfolded and the horse is rubbed over with the bigger bits of plastic. At the end, the horse should be able to cometo terms with the sheet being flapped about near it. Sacking out is a very slow process carried out over a period of weeks or months, depending on the horse. You must never start to move on a stage until the horse is totally happy with the first stages. Sacking out is a technique developed by Monty Roberts - read about him on www.montyroberts.co.uk or www.montyroberts.com.

Sarah,
I don't know if you are familiar with John Lyons, but he also has a method of "sacking out". It is done in a round pen with no halter or other restraint on the horse. Monty Roberts may do it the same way but I am only familiar with his "joining up". John Lyons is considered one of the best horse whisperers. His methods are well worth looking into.Check out his website at http://www.beulahland.com/lyons/index.htm. His article on the Horse Whisperer movie is very interesting. Some of his methods are similar to Monty Roberts
