hi, please look at this thread before reading on as it will set the story up nicely for you!!http://www.newrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=108096
So on saturday we were off on our first show, just the riding horse class at the local RC spring show.
as usual i spent too long in the shower (it was 6am ok:eek: ) and arrived at the yard 15mins late which meant i was later than i hoped for arriving at the show ground and hence i had no warm up time which i was panicing about as i normaly need 30mins!
we went into the class and he was an angel! we were honestly going far better than we ever have before!
he looked amazing aswell (even if i do say so mayself:p ) - but i should think so considering i was plaiting him until 10pm:o
we did the usual walk trot canter in a ride before we lined up for the judge to rid ein our "provisional line-up" where i was 5th. he was the youngest, teh smallest and the only one not in a phelm (sp). the judge was a really good rider until...she got on jerry..he went too fast, lost his floaty paces and had his head up in the air like a giraffe. immediately i lost those marks. i then did the trot-up but i couldnt get him to stand square for his inspection.
so..we didnt get placed but i don't have a care in the world as i was so nervous and he behaved so well for having to stand for 1hr 30mins! My OH and family went off on one though as the winning line-up were "pro's" and the winning horse had a bit change and was bucking and rearing during jerry's trot-up.
now the funny part...there was 8 in the class and it was judged to 6th place so i began following the other girl who wasn't placed out of the arena. she was then called back in as she was the only RC member in the class and was therefore the highest placed RC member so she also received a rossette. i stood there bemused before hearing shouted "thanks for taking part Amy, can you please leave the arena":o :o :o i went beetroot!!
anyways i took him to their outdoor arena to sort out his head probs after the judge rode him. the vid of this is really good, you can see him throwing his head up in parts. i also have a vid/pics of the judge riding him for comparision but i don't think i am allowed to post this?
WARNING:lots of pics!!

He's a lovely boy, what show class did you enter>
I'v had that before...once i entered my ex pony into an m&m class and as soon as i got to the entrance i heard 'move out of the way, theres a stallion coming through', of course, a flashy welsh D trotted in jogging all over the place. Its paces were to die for, but boy did it misbehave in the ring. Of course it won in the end, the best behaved horse didnt get placed (mine).
Well done, in B's first show i got 26 (or something) faults in the jumping - (i had to be led round the ring because Barnaby kept refusing all the jumps), and went in two classes and didnt get placed!

ETA - Just watched video, hes got a stunning outline!!

thanks! it was Riding Horse, i did enjoy myself but i do find it funny when things like that happen!
i forgot to mention...my horse that i loan out, now please bear in mind that she is on loan as she spooks at everything hence isn't ideal at shows came....3rd in lightweight hunter....6th in the novice- she's never been placed in sj and FIRST in the intermediate - i still look like a combination of:eek:, and :D

Just to ask how do you ask him for an outline? It looks like he needs to work more from behind as hes a little on the forehand.

i sqeeze both reins alternately, keep the outside leg on and sqeeze with my inside leg in conjunction with my hand *i think*.
i agree that he is not working his back-end in the vid, he is quite fast paced and we have spent our tim ewith him so far slowing him down. I am having a lesson tomorrow (his 6th Bday!!) and will ask to work on this now that i have succeeded in stopping him from rushing his trot.

Why did the judge ride him? I've never seen a class where the horses was ridden by the judge  I don't think I would want to enter one where they did.
He looks lovely, you should be proud of him despite not placing. After all it was your first show together.

hi, thanks guys.
WV - i really don't know much about showing but for certain classes the judge does ride (over here anyways). as it was riding horse the judge rode to see if he was suitable for the class. the last RH class i entered, the judge didn't ride but made us do our own little "show piece". i think it just depends on the judge.

hi, no thats fine, i shall let him know when i see him - he has abandoned us recently in favour of building his house - how rude one should expect all RI's to live in a hovel and be at their clients every beck and call;):D

Jerry is gorgeous! For some reason, after reading your other thread you linked to, I was imagining a cob lol! You two look great, he looks a little on the forehand and occasionally goes behind the vertical but i'm sure that wouldn't be too hard to fix in your lessons. I love chestnuts!
I don't like to critique riding but I will say 'look up!' - I think that may be why your shoulders tip forwards, because they are going where you are looking.
Good job, I hate when naughty horses get placed!

Hi There, I'm wondering if you used to have a pony called Tiffany? I think I came to see her last year...
Your boy looks lovely, I know it can be so unfair sometimes.

Yes I did! Tiffany was lovely but a wee bit small for me I think. I got a horse of similar size but he rides big (does everything big!). Going to start showing him this year and getting really nervous about it. Not really sure what classes to do....Any ideas. I'ii attempt to attach a picture. This was taken last year and his neck is less 'bullish'and he's lost weight (thank god).

how about small hunter classes?he's slightly heavier set than tiffany and i think that he is a good strong hunter build - i think gilder and daffy dilly know alot about showing so you could ask them. if he has floaty paces though he could do well in riding horse?are you the lady who had just had a baby??

if you are a member of the RC then i would suggest doing the combined training nights that will be held at inglistion. this will get him used to the venue and you could just do the dressage trainig for a while to get him used to the place before you take him jumping?#
if you want to start jumping then every wednesday evening inglistion have clear rounds and i don't think it gets busy until 7.30ish - think it starts at 6:confused:
there's also a couple of places "up the braes" - east caplaw is a small yard and they do some of the RC stuff...muir(house/head - something like that) is also quite small and quiet and the also do clear round nights etc.

Hey Amy!!!!
Well done on the show thing!!! Your boy look absolutely gorgeous!!!!! The pros always go to the little shows!!! They just do it fir the easy rosettes I think!!! I no longer go to the stonehouse show because it is filled with peeps who have dressage and showing as a religion and they're horses are schooled for olympia an HOYS.
Well done and done worry bout the blunder. Kia deposited me, on my feet, right next to the judge at last years first show!!!
Are you gonna have a bash at the E.K show????

You've got a lovely horse there, with some work you could definately be at the end of the line up. The main things are to get her working more consistently (as you know) and if you don't already, get as many experienced riders as you can on her to get her used to the feel of different riders, squeezing with one hand then the other to get an outline isn't what most ride judges will do, so she'll have to learn to adapt to different styles.
The other thing is turnout, if you're planning to do more shows there's ways to improve on it that would really alter the overall picture. One thing you could do for free is move your saddle back a good few inches to show off her shoulder for example. There was at least one other in a snaffle in your class (from the photos) and don't worry about changing to a pelham or double until she's more consistent.
Really well done, I hope your result hasn't put you off going again.
PS - why have a shower on the morning of a show? You're going to have a hat on the next day (or is that just me who goes from riding hat to baseball cap and doesn't mind being minging!)

Hi thanks for all the nice replies!
O_L - he's a westphalianXholstiner - doesn't look it know, his bloodlines go back to 1633 though so i know there's no discrepencies:D
Glider, there was one other with a snaffle but i didnt count them as they also wern't placed! I really do enjoy showing and i have a mare that i think may make a good hack (i'm referring to another post where you explained this class to us). I would like to show more often and will see how his jumping spans out as he had bsja potential but may be too sharp for it as he was spoiled a bit as a 4yr old!
I will pm you with pics of my mare if thats ok?
