View Full Version : Please help! Loose dropping in horses turned out 24/7?

I have opted to put my filly out in the fields in which the yard owner allows the horses to go out in 24/7 over summer. Though these have been topped there is quite a fair bit of grass and most of the horses and ponies now have somewhat loose cowpatty type droppings, its not horrendous but it is certainly loose. I'm really concerned about this, can someone advise if this is a big concern and whether I should make a change? There are no laminitics in the field of course. The yard owner says they are just getting used to the grass after being on the bare winter paddocks and will be use for a while and it giving them probiotics by hand daily. If someone could put my mind at rest on this topic I would be so grateful, is the YO right?

Ohh i finaly worked out what YO stands for - thanks!

Back to the original problem - we get that every spring here. With such fresh grass coming through they tend to impersonate a cow.

I just feed them grass hay to help bulk them up a bit. But it does pass once their body is used to it again.

Kind of like if we went nuts eating fresh fruits and vege from eating junk, we would probably be cow patty like tooo!:D

Perfectly normal, never worry about a few cow pats on new grass.

So long as their worming is up to date and they look happy and glossy you have to expect a few grassy poos on grass!

Haha! OK thanks sooo much! :) How long would you usually expect it to take to pass?

As long as the rich grass keeps up!

very true, but you can also add a digestive enhancer to help her digestive system to cope with the change and stabilise again quicker - a yeats and/or prebiotic and probiotic supplement, such as Dengie Triple Action or Biotal Equine Gold.
