Thought I'd post in case it helps anyone :) .
For a full, deep bed with a horse on box rest, fully mucked out every day:
Shavings: 2 1/2 bales per week.
Cost = £6.30 per bale so £15.75 per week.
Hemp/flax: 1 bale per week.
Cost = £6.60 per bale so £6.60 per week.
I started with hemp, am allergic to it (can't breathe) so her bed is about 1/2 and 1/2 hemp/flax at the moment, as it changes over. The two seem to work identically though.
The hemp/flax makes a nice firm base, even if you fully muck out every day, so the horse never gets through to the concrete.
