hi, has anyone ever used a girth extender? My boy has been on holiday for 2 months and has put on some weight. I have just ordered a new girth which is supposed to be 'revolutionary' and therefore I want to use it right away. Problem is it will be few inches too short at the minute so i was thinking about getting a girth extender. My girth is a stud guard type so would i need two extenders- one for each side to make sure even or would one be enough? Also does anyone know where i can buy a brown leather one online?

I'm not sure what type your girth is. I have one that I use on a normal 2 buckled girth and it works fine. I got it secondhand on ebay - it's brown webbing, but doesn't show under the saddle flap anyway.

the girth is a airflex long stud guard so the guard sits on the sternum. so each side of the girth attachment must be equal or the guard part will be off centre. Does your extender make up for much length on your girth? I only need myn to give an extra 2 inches to length so would one like you have work ok? Oh, and where do the buckles of the original girth sit i.e under saddle or outside?

well if you need the stud guard in the middle, just pop the extender on one end of the girth and have that side on the higher girth strap holes, and the other side on lower holes, if you see what I mean? I think that would keep it central...

A normal girth extender should easily give you 2 inches - I think they are a really good idea.

thanks doris. would you recommend the synthetic one? and does it interfere with your legs or bulk saddle out when done up?

I've never used a stud girth so can't be much use there but if you want a good quality leather extender, have a look here:

Rob Jenkins is a Master Saddler so if you decide you want a bespoke extender or something, it might be worth a phonecall:)

I didn't notice any difference under my legs while riding with it. This is the first one I've used so am hardly an authority! I bought it simply because I bought a lovely wintec girth that does up OK, but not with many holes spare (fat cob syndrome). This one just happened to come up on ebay, but as it doesn't show, webbing is fine and easy to wash.

sounds grand doris, thanks for your help. i had already bought another cheaper girth to use on him when he comes off holiday but thought it's prob much better to use the gr8 quality one with an extender. So cheers for help.
