Hi everyone!
Ok, quick question about pelhams for showing....
so would you use a rugby pelham with a sliphead? Or a specific showing pelham...or a normal one?
My girly is ridden in a french link and although the showing pelhams look very neat, you can only get them in a ported mouth...whats the difference in action with these compared to a french link?
Obviously you can get the others in a french link and I have been told a rugby with a sliphead is the usual....but I think these look a bit busy??
Advice would be welcomed!!
Thanks

you can get unported pelhams... jointed pelhams and it goes on the bridle like a normal bit would.
and you can even get french link pelhams

This would mean you would ride her like you do at the moment, just like your french link snaffle but you'll have 2 reins so the option of adding the curb, if she's normally in a snaffle then you will only hold the 2nd rein and not use it.
ETA: it doesn't attach and have the exact same action but very similar ;)

thanks coss....but what I meant was....I've ridden in pelhams many times before...always french linked as per her 'normal' bit....however, the showing pelhams are only available in ported mouths (have been totally unable to find one with a french link as these are much more specific than ordinary pelhams) and I don't know what the difference in action a ported mouth is to a french link.
Also, what particular type of pelham would you use for showing?? Or the specific showing pelhams....It has been suggested that a rugby with a sliphead (to look like a double) is correct??

if you want the look of a double bridle without the 2 bits then a rugby is what you want:)

i'm no showing person but my friend did a hunter class and she just used a rubber vulcanite pelham (or was it a jointed ?) i didn't think you had to have a specific showing pelham... i ported mouth is just to allow more room for a thick tongue, they are straight barred so if your mare is used to a french link she may find it doesn't have enought mobility.
sorry i can't really help as i don't show, i just know what i picked up when my friend did the hunter class.

Which ever you want is fine. If you get a show pelham- and i *think* they can be found- and if your desperate made, you dont need a sliphead, where as with a rugby you do. Personally I just use a normall pelham- and wouldn't use a rugby (as i think they look a bit 'messy') Some people do think a show pelham 'looks better' but to be honest it really doesn't matter :)

Another that's not a fan of rugbys. I really don't think they look like doubles at all.
I have a show pelham with an eliptical link. I think it looks so much smarter than his normal pelham, especially as I had it made so we can't use a lipstrap with it, as the lipstrap does clutter his head.

And in action, albeit with a sliphead which I don't use

The bit set me back £80. Fylde Saddlery (where mine was ordered) do a French Link one for £45. Bear in mind that the mouthpiece is thin - it cannot be made any thicker.

DD, that "show pelham" you have got is what I would call a "rugby pelham".
I use one on Harvey as he has big tongue/small mouth syndrome and doesn't like two mouthpieces. I use a sliphead with it, too.
To the OP - A ported mouthpiece doesn't differ much in action from a french link. It is just to make more room for the tongue. The only way to find out if your horse will like it, is to try it.

This differeance is, that a show pelham doesn't have the extra 'link' like a rugby does, so when its used without a slip head the 'snaffle ring' doesn't hang down, as it would with a rugby:

Mm, I've always called your "show pelham" a "rugby pelham". In your terms, I have a show pelham, not a rugby. :p
