Last night I went along to the Dan and Grant (Practical Horsemanship) demo at Croft Top EC near Accrington.
For thoes who do not know them, they are the riders who tour the UK and Europe with Monty Roberts. I found this demo very interesting because I felt they succseeded in some of the areas that Monty fails, those areas being there is none of the overt commercialisum (No repeated requests to buy the books and DVD) but more to the point it was more about the horse, there was no fixed time limit to cram a set number of horses in, no feeing that they had to force a result in half an hour and no backing a horse for the first time.
They only worked with 3 horses and the first horse was worked with for the full first half of the show, this was a very nervious horse who seemed to have alot of probles with trusting people. By the end of the first half this horse was alot happier to be handeled and the owner was very pleased with the result. Dan and Grant had worked slowly and at the horses pace with the result that the owner had a very good idea of what they could work on with him.
After the interval there was a horse that was scared of audience clapping and a bad loader. Again Dan and Grant worked at the horses pace, never going for a striking change in the minimum time. Watching them work was more like bing invited to their yard to watch them work.
I was very impressed with demo and will be going to the next two... OK, so thay asked me to go and take some photos, but I'd still go if I had not been invited because I really enjoy watching them work and the way it was about the horse not about the demo.
They still have 7 more dates on this tour left if anyone is wanting to see them: http://www.practicalhorsemanship.co.uk/3.html
Photos to follow soon!
