How do you get your grooming kit really clean.
Just going to riding schools now but can't break the habit of having my own grooming kit.( had my own horse 20years ago)
I've recently changed yards and want to clean my brushes before taking to my new place.
What do you suggest and how often do you clean them

If they're not leather backed I bung them in a pillowcase (or this wonderful washbag with zip thing I've just got) and put them in the washing machine. Do it at least twice a year, which is appalling but I do have 2 of everything so it's like I'm doing it four times a year which isn't much better but salves my conscience :p .

I chuck them in a bucket of Milton about once a week - but then I don't have fancy expensive brushes that might get damaged by bleach ;) I soak for about 15 mins - 2 x Long Dandy Brushes, a groomer's stone, a rubber curry comb and a kiddie's hair brush (for mane and tail). Horse is grass kept, so that's all that gets used regularly.

And put in bits and stirrups for that lovely shiny effect- don't forget to unload before OH gets back from golf tho!:D

I pour some horse-shampoo on mine and then scrub with the palm of other hand under a warm running tap, seems to get them clean enough! On a day like this I should be doing mine then letting them dry in the sun (yes, I know thats probably naughty if they're wooden backed.......)
Love the idea of the dishwasher btw.........

I like the dishwasher idea very much, but they've got so much hair in them at the moment I think I'm going to have to do them by hand.

Keep the ideas coming...

You could just imagine him coming hold with his ' golf club friends' and offering a coffee/drink/beer/wine ( delete as approiate!) and then getting some glasses/mugs out of the dishwasher !!!

i use horse shampoo and warm water. put brushes in a bucket with the water and use the dandy brush to clean the bristles of the other burshes (which will in turn clean the dandy. doesn't take too long, bung the brushes in warm water to rinse and leave in the sun to dry :)
