View Full Version : Calling equine therapists ....

I wonder if any therapists would mind giving their opinions about the following:

Mayoral has taken to lifting his head up, turning it to the left and 'yawing' on his bit when asked to transition up from walk to trot and trot to canter. He will continue this for about five minutes and then it seems to settle down. It does, however, happen everytime he is asked to increase his pace. ie; we could do walk-trot-walk and the next time I ask him to trot it will happen again. He also turns his face to the left when we are just walking out on a hack - I thought he was just looking at things to start with but I have now noticed that his neck is very rarely totally straight and it's always to the left. I left him totally to his own devices and he was virtually crabbing up the lane.

Today we were out after four days of no riding (he is box kept and hasn't been able to go out at all because of the weather) and he was fine walking but as soon as we increased pace he started with the head twisting. I also noticed that he caught his back toe (left side I think) a couple of times - like he wasn't lifting his leg high enough. He has always almost slid this rear hoof along the ground on occasions and I wonder if he has any muscle or hip problems.

I appreciate that remote diagnosis is not possible but unfortunately there are NO equine therapists where I live (you'd be stoned for witchcraft). Just wondered if there is anything I might be able to do help him?

I had his teeth/mouth checked last Friday (by an extremely top notch vet who looks after the Spanish Endurance riding squad - long story, friend of a friend thank G*d, no money involved) and he said there is nothing the matter with Mayo's teeth or mouth.

Ok for the head thing you need to get some relaxation techniques for him PM me and I can hopefully let you in on some secrets that will allow the occipital atalantis joint to become less tight which will help. Have to read rest of post for the other bits

Hi. I respect that you have had your horses teeth checked but I would advise getting a Equine dental tech out. Vets are vets not dentist and I personally wouldn't trust my Doctor with the welfare of my teeth. In the south west there is an excellent Dentist called Lucinda Stockley you could get in touch with or contact the British Equine Dental association. On the tilleyfarm.co.uk web site there is a write up about how oral imbalance effects the rest of the body. Hope this helps!
