I have a Welsh Sec D. He is a fantastic mover, and i mean fantastic. He has just been broken and is going as well as expected in 3 weeks.

Problem!? HE wont trot in hand. He eithr stops, turns and faces me or starts to lunge. I dont think he doesnt understand! He knows what i want as he has done it a few time but most of the times acts up, typical welsh.

I have done alot of showing with arabs, hunters and coloureds but he is totaly different!

ANY IDEAS are welcome as i would like to take him to a show this year! he he

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.

What about join-up work? If he follows you and it goes successfully, he should want to stop when you stop, walk when you walk, trot when you "trot" etc.

Sounds like he doesn't understand.

You need to get it in walk first, where he will walk out on a long lead with you by his shoulder.

Then you need to develop some sort of signal that you can use to ask him to trot. Whether a click or a voice command. If he lunges well, use lunging sessions to establish it before trying it inhand. Once he breaks into trot, stop and that's his reward for doing as he was asked.

If you do it on the left rein, with you on one side and a wall on the other, it may be easier to prevent him turning in.

Build it up until you have a pony that will trot with you at his shoulder on command. Preferably a discreet command that you wont be embarassed using in the show ring. Make sure you aren't holding the lead too short and restricting him in anyway, as it could be that you are pulling him to face you without realising.
