Hello! I'm new here. I had a great NH moment today and I wanted to share how far my horse Sonny and I have come.

I bought Sonny a year ago and he had a terrible play nipping problem. He was also sullen and didn't seem to like me very much. I bought him because I believed in him and saw something in him that no one else did. He is a coming 2 yr old now and I have kept him intact as a potential breeding stallion (years from now).

After using countless different methods to conquer the biting issues and behavior issues, I was advised to try the Parelli 7 games. I won't get into the specifics, but IT WORKED! In the last 4 months we have hit many milestones that remind me of how far we have come, and today we had yet another.

Up until I started Parelli I had to have the vet come out and sedate Sonny so he could have his feet trimmed (everytime I turned my back to pick up his foot he would bite me or farrier in the back). Well, today I had a vet appointment to have a vet come out to check to make sure Sonny's testicles are dropping normally. The vet that came out was the same vet that had sedated Sonny a few times so he hadn't seen Sonny in about 6 months. As we walked back to the pasture he saw Sonny standing there w/out a halter on. He said he would wait outside the pasture while I 'caught' him. I told him it was ok and he could come in the pasture. I walked up to Sonny, haltered him and led him over to the vet. Sonny jumped a little during the examination because the vets hands were a lil cold, and well, he was getting felt up;) but other than that he stood like a champ! Good news, Sonny has dropped normally. But the best part was the vets absolute astonishment that this was even the same horse. As I stood there with Sonnys head in my arms stroking and kissing his nose the vet asked WHAT ON EARTH I had done to turn him around. I said one word...Parelli. :)

Just wanted to share. Thanks for listening. :)

Brilliant - well done! Most young intact males tend to develop a nipping problem unless it's nipped in the bud (so to speak), even when they have an otherwise sweet personality. Your boy sounds really nice! Also, you are probably a naturally sympathetic handler who has the savvy that stallions demand.

I love a happy ending or should I say begining ;)

I'm so glad you found something that worked for you and your horse. Do you think you'll continue on through the levels, try another approach or are you where you want to be?

At this point, I will continue through the Levels doing as much as I can because I won't be riding Sonny until he is 5. I am also starting to look at Frank Bells methods..he has a program which focuses on "Intimacy"..teaching your stallion to submit to more than just pressure. One of the methods is to rub your hand along the curves of your horse hindquarters next to the tail (the silky part) until the horse lifts his tail. That is a sign of submission and trust. The funny thing was, at first, even as far as Sonny and I have come, he wouldn't do it. It took some time, so there is always room for growth.

I have only just bought my first horse and haven't even got him home yet. Luckily he is very laid back already but I have been interested in NH for a long time and have booked for the 2 day Parelli session at the NEC in Aug.

It is great to hear such good responses.

well done to both of you! i use the rubbing the quarters method too, though i hadn't heard of frank bell. if you intend in keeping your boy as a stallion it's essenctial that he allows you to touch all his bits and pieces. they are naturally very protective about them and can get very nasty about it if you don't do it from the start.

we rub our foals all over from about 2 days old (gives mum and baby enough time to bond without us interupting) and then get everyone else to do it. it works wonders for later on with training as they find the contact calming.

as said above keep us posted on how you get on. if you want to carry on in this vain as he gets older and to the ridden side you could try reading domanique berbier's books. he's very natural in his riding style and it suits the horses i work with perfectly with nh.
