Book?

Can anyone reccommend a good book that covers tack, saddlery and associated items (rugs/boots etc):confused:

Something that goes from the very bascs (how to measure and fit a rug/which way up to put brushing boots!/how to fit overreach boots/types of bit etc) up to covering more advanced tack and equipment issues.

Not a total answer but get hold of the shires catalogue. They give you loads of info about fitting rugs etc and what bit does what etc and its free!

I am finding the information I need, but in dribs and drabs and from a variety of sources. I was hoping there might be a comprehensive book out there, where most of the information is in one place and that I can dip in and out of as well as for bedtime reading :)

Horse wear IS meant to be a "dark art" you know! Otherwise tack shops would go bust!

I think the Pony Clubs Manual of Equitation is the closest I've seen. However, it's all very BHS (obviously) and I personally am becoming less of a fan of the BHS methods the more experience I get. I have a fairly old version, so I'm not sure what the newest is like.

You can get those really thick hardback books often called "Complete" or "Encyclopedia" book of horses or whatever. Some of those are ok, but off the top of my head I couldn't tell you which.

It is probably better to get the information in dribs and drabs from different sources though rather than relying on just the one book.

I remember standing there with my first set of brushing boots quite some time ago, trying to work out which was for the front and which for the back, which way up they went, whether to fasten the velcro to the inside or outside and what darned position on the leg they should go anyway!!!! :o

I just got the BEST book on the subject. I bought it used from the US Patent Library. It covers developments in both Europe and America so should really apply to anybody interested in Tack. it's called teh New Book of Saddlery & Tack.
