My (Nearly) 4 Year Old Welsh Cob Sec D, is a little star(most of the time) hes just getting used to all the scary things but he goes forward really well. I decided to take him on a new route about 2 weeks ago, and as we went past some houses he started napping, spinning round, rearing the lot. i managed to get him past(after a very long time) and then he went forward really well again.
Iv tried him many more times after that, a couple of times with my mum on her horse and yet he still does the same thing in the same place every time.
i know iv just got to keep trying with him, but does anyone have any other suggestions? xx

Hiya
I have recently broken my hoss in ( 5yo) I spent alot of the time previous long reining him round the roads.
Hes been doing great, as in 99% bombproof ploddy hack..
then wham bam.. hes awful! Yesterday he napped reared spooked span round backed up you name it.. When I was heading backwards in the hedge tahts when I had to bail out.. This was over a pile of bricks/sand he usually dosent bat an eyelid. Wheres my gentle plod gone
Later on I reverted back to long reining and took him out again.. he was a swine but I feel very confident on the lines with him and we got through his TANTRUMS ( big style) and carried on upto and past the bricks sand with no incident
Today I'm long reining him again and were going round the whole block, ( hopefully !)
Then I am going to ride again tomorrow.
I think he was really trying it on..coupled with his new love for his fellow stablemate mare at the yard.. doubled with the spring grass.. he was a loon.
But He will not win!
Good luck with your horse, remember there young and will try things on. They need reasuurance and a gentle reminder.
If you longrein I can really recommend it, I always revert back to using it to get over problems.
At the moment I am trying to get him to work in his paddock ( no chance) but instead of riding and having a battle I *personally* feel I can get alot more out of longreining.
It also gives them the confidence to walk out alone infront.. He will let me lead him round anywhere he trusts me in that respect.. but He has to learn to have the courage to do it himself..
Back to basics is always a good thing in my eyes!
My * personal opioion* With your horse being 3 rising 4... Take things slowly with him.. Lead him out/long rein him... build up his confidence. I wouldnt really be hacking out on him properley for maybe another 6 months. I would spend that time working on his issues. :)

God, this sounds familair !! my boy did exactly the same yesterday he is just 5yrs, we were hacking along in the lead then all of a sudden he saw some sheep and that was that, he backed up, little rear, spun around  no idea where it came from, I attempted to fight him for about 5 mins (seemed liked hours) but could not get the better of him he just would not pass this spot, I unfortunately had to give into him because there were cars waiting to get passed. So now he is 1 nill in the lead so I am sure he will try it on again but hopefully I will beat him this time (not literally - well maybe ;) ) I may try and long rein him past this spot, what do you do if the horse backs up ? I can see myself having a water skiing lesson down the road !!!

How about leading him by the scary place? You being next to him, may give him more confidence:confused: .I'd recommend a very long rope, and gloves!
Good luck. I'm sure you'll crack it:)
