View Full Version : Trimmed a bit too much?

Had a farrier out to trim my horse the other day. He has only been shod once in his life and spent the rest of the time without, but hasn't had any proper 'barefoot' trimmers out to do his feet, just a normal farrier, with no real problems.

Anyway, i haven't used this one for quite a long time, but i asked him back and he took a lot more off than my other farrier usually does, which i was pleased with, but then the next day when i had a proper look, i wasn't sure if he took too much off. His soles are now totally flat, and the frog seems to be sticking out from the hoof, if held his hoof up and looked at it horizontally, the frog would be protruding out. Now last summer they got that flat on their own and he went very footsore, but i didnt take photos so i can't compare. Don't know how much you can tell from these pictures, but first is hind, second is front.

Any opinions? He doesn't seem to have left much heel or much of anything to be honest, but i don't know if it just looks wierd to me because my old farrier would just give them a quick file down and they didn't look as if they had been done at all!

The foot does look very flat but it's hard to tell if it's flat because the wall is too short or if there's a build up of dead sole that needs to exfoliate. Ideally the pic needs to be clearer and sighting down the heels to get an impression of height, and even that's not always foolproof.

Is he sound?

He is sound so far, but has only been on smooth or soft ground. I'll try and get some more pictures today.
