That's how our hairy old pony presents with lice in late spring - often rubbing the sides of his head furiously on his fores. Some times you can see the lice (stripy teeny beetly things kicking 6 legs wildly!) but not seeing them doesn't rule it out.

Ivermectin wormer should kill off one of the two common types of louse, the one that sucks blood (hence drug reaches louse). But there's another type that just lives off scurf / dead skin, so you may need to treat the coat directly.

We tried many powders and gentler remedies with no luck over the years. Now we use Deosect (cypermethrin) bought OTC from vets. You dilute it and spray it over the body / sponge it on, withers to tail. We put it generously on our boys legs too. Because it acts as a fly deterrent too (kept them away for about a month) our vet recommended using it on his legs monthly thro' the summer, to prevent bites.

You repeat the application after at least 2 weeks, to kill any lice that were eggs the first time.

I'm amazed how quickly our 32 year old pony's fur grows back - tufts after only a week! Must be the vet mix he keeps scoffing...

I'm glad its not just me (or my horses) But my vet won't prescribe any thing until they see the boys, how mad is that? You don't take a dog to the vet with fleas just buy some spray. I've even had the nit comb and got some to show them. Just bought some Deosect online no prescription needed. £27.50 if any one needs any.
Gunna have fun spraying my colt foal with it! wish me luck! LOL :o

bought some Deosect online no prescription needed. £27.50 It's a bit pricey but the tin lasts for years - in fact ours will expire before we use it up, at this rate. You dilute it 1:50, so it last for ages.

Gunna have fun spraying my colt foal with it! wish me luck! LOL don't forget you can sponge it on if you prefer; eg withers to tail top (theoretically it spreads everywhere) or all over them, as per instructions (what we do, 'cos their legs need it most). If you spray, as the instructions say, do protect yourself - & work out which way the wind's blowing so you don't get a facefull!

Thanks for that! I know what you mean he's a Shire and has loads of feather I can only imagine how many are lurking in there.
I don't know if I should call the breeder and let him know cos if he doen't do much with his mare he'll never see them. The only way I saw them is that I was out with my coloured and saw a stowaway walking across a white patch now his spring coat's through. When I got home got the nit comb and all my horses are full of them. But Horace the youngser I can't see them if I part the hair even though I know they're there. Just because of the colour of his coat. What do you think would you call the breeder? I don't want his mare to have the burden of a foal and lice.
