Had my horse microchipped but didnt have the same reaction! If the swelling is still there in the morning i would ring the company or vet who did it just to see if it is common for them to react in this way! sorry i havent been any help!!!!

Hi there!

I help out at a smaller horse rescue. As policy, all of the incoming horses get chips implanted. To date, we've never seen any reaction.

It can't be a reaction to the chip itself, as the chip is encased in inert glass.

We use AVID chips, and per their instructions we clean the injection site well to disinfect. I think some people even suggest clipping the site, though we do not do that. My guess is perhaps dirt on the site got pushed under the skin, and now you've got a little bit of an abscess as a result.

I cannot advise if a vet should look at it or not without seeing it, but if in doubht, perhaps you should call the vet and let the vet decide if the horse should be seen?

Kia had this reaction!!!

You could see his a mile away and it was under his mane!!!!

The vet just said it was a reaction to either microchip or the disinfectant used to sterilise the chip.

he also said that it could be and slight infection due to the size of the needle. He just told me to disinfect it daily. I rubbed it with arnica oil too just to relieve and pain.

Is the lump painful???

I've had both my horses and my 2 dogs done and all of them just had a tiny pimple for a few days until the chip settled in - never had any swelling :o
