View Full Version : How often do you clean your horses bottom?

Was at the yard yesterday and the topic of cleaning bottoms came up, one of the girls only washes her horses bottom when she bathes it in the summer and another of the girls washes her horses every couple of days with trusty old baby wipes
My question is, how often do you clean your horses bum, and what do you use?

I check them daily (gently moving the tail aside while they're engrossed in their feed bowl).
But I only clean if it's dirty - which isn't very often, a few times a year I guess. No point disturbing the fur / oils / skin flora balance / delicate area, unless there's a problem already, IMHO.
When our aged NF is loose occasionally, I use baby wipes (Sainbury's Basic cheapo ones) if it's only a little mess under the tail.
If his legs are covered, we shampoo with Tea Tree Shampoo and tepid water & a sponge (but he hates it & wiggles everywhere). Then pat dry gently with old towels. Then everyone laughs at his fluffy cute legs! lol

Same here. Have a look and used sensitive baby wipes if need be. Have been in charge of Joy since the begining of November and not needed to do it yet. :)

I leave well alone! I check daily when I'm grooming their tail or just generally grooming, but I don't get involved unless its particularly messy. Which it generally isn't!

Every day as part of general grooming. I use good old fashioned water and sponge.

That's me too. Udders first and then bottom.

Star gets a thorough groom once a week and I clean his bottom then with water and spong

Max goes through phases where he'll make a mess all round that area and then I clean him every day. If I don't, you can see him in his box swishing his tail and stamping his back legs. I think the stuff irritates his skin.
I usually just squirt a hose at him, tbh. Pressure hose the areas with fur, a bit gentler on the bits right underneath his tail. Then wait til he's dried, and apply sudocream/nappy cream if it's sore.
If he's clean, then he doesn't get done at all.

Everyday! Usually use a damp sponge and water but just been wormed so cleaning with hibi scrub for a few days to ensure no nasties remain under the tail!

Only as required - ie. never in 1 year of ownership. Gunky mares, more often though.

I don't :o I used to in the old days, you know, "separate sponges for face and dock" lol. I probably wipe her nose more than her bits (saphy that is). If it ever looks dirty i'll wipe it but it never does.
I did however have to pull off manky matted mare hair from around Rosie my shetland's teats and between her back legs the other day, I think because she's so small and fluffy it 'gathers' when she's moulting. It stank!

Everytime I hose them down after a ride.
I use my hand after all it is just sweat and grass and you are washing it away with the hose. The I towel dry them :D

When it needs doing (rarely). Thankfully Saff isn't gunky and she's quite a clean pee'er :D

whenever its needs doing, its easy if you just hose it when you wash your horse of after work, then you dont ever need to clean it.

If it looks dirty, I'd clean it, otherwise not.
But then today is the first time I've bathed her with shampoo in ages! I usually just hose down with water and squeegee/towel dry when she's sweaty after a workout (including between her hind legs).

When I owned Topaz, she got done once a week because she's quite mucky. Coquette keeps herself fairly clean, so it rarely gets done.
