hi,i would like some views/advice on what i could feed my 11 year old arab mare.shes an extremly good doer and at present is on half a scoop of alfa a and soya oil and 3-4 sections of hay.at the moment she is doing about half an hours work four days a week while my saddle is on order so its mainly lunging and a bit of bareback.she lacks that little bit extra i realise she needs more for the amount of work shes doing but im stuck on what i could give her  i obviously dont want her to fizz up or anything thats going to put weight on ! any help would be much apreciated:D

when it comes to good doers, slow release fibre-based feeds are low in energy and high in fibre, yet this energy would most likely be used to put on more weight as it is used slowly.
small amounts of energy from cereal-based sources are often very useful as the energy is used very quickly so cannot be stored as fat.
however only small amounts should be used so as not to make your horse more excitable and put on weight.
slowly introducing a small handful a day or so (as and when needed) of an additive such as Dengie Naked Oats may prove very efficient and useful.
you should also find that, as your horse's' fitness improves, she has more energy.

horses not receiving a balanced diet can be a little lacking in apsrkle. since your horse is not being fed a vitamin and mineral supplement/compound feed/balancer, you should really add one to make her diet fully balanced.
one designed for laminatics and good doers would suit, such as Baileys Lo-Cal, Blue Chip Original/Lami-Light or Global herbs Globalvite (google them).
good luck
