My quarter horse has started to have what appear to be sleep attacks. He will drop his nose to the ground and a few seconds later he will stumble backwards. He has never completely fallen but I am worried abotu him having a major accident when I am not around. I have talked to my vet and he says it could be a case of naracalepsy. Any thoughts on how to treat this process? I know there is no cure but is there anything to minimize the affects of this?

My friends horse does this it's really funny and nothing much to worry about. But I'll talk to her more about it. I do know that her horse has a trigger that sets it off. Playing with his face. lol :p

my friends horse has that problem he can be running about like a lunatic then suddenly - splat!! Its quite funny to watch as he gets up and just carries on like, it wasnt me.. didnt do anything! The only thing that can really be done is make sure your horse is wearing boots 24/7... my friend has brushing boots, over reachers and knee boots on him, he dosnt seem to mind. just make sure there is nothing he can whack himself off.. try keep him amused.. like a snackaball or a boredom breaker to keep his brain active. :)

I knew a QH like that, but he did go right down  oddly though he never did it in the field, well only when he was stood dosing anyway :p
Mikey even went down once with his owner on his back - normally if he started going we would just give him a prod to wake him up - everyone on the yard knew to keep an eye on him and shout or prob if nec :p
He only did it with a his rider on that once - they were waiting at a show to do their class (was a very long day) and the owner didn't give him a nudge because he was asleep himself  :p
Mikey never injured himself by doing it, normally he would wake up when his nose touched the floor :D
If its full on Naracalepsy then I would probably boot up (westropp do those brushing/knee combos that might be good) but if it is just the deep sleep without locking their legs when they sink down I probably wouldn't worry too much :p
