I think it would be very helpful to identify the mods in the current user list on the bottom of the page. Didn't their names used to come up bold or something? I forget who is a mod and apparently the 'report a post' system fails at times. It would be nice to know which mod is online to just PM them directly and have a post taken care of before it causes too much disruption.

I believe some of the mods use the "cloak of invisibility" ;) :p

Why? That seems even less useful. What would be the advantage of it?

Ah - you'll have to ask them that... I'm sure they have their reasons.....

yeah I've heard that too :)

I suppose its quite a useful tool as they can browse threads and generally do their job without you knowing they're there and without being disturbed :)

Nobody wants to be available all the time, I know I don't :)

I suppose its only the equivalent of locking your door after work and pretending youre out when you dont want to be disturbed :p

Actually it isn't so much to hide from the regular users who post, but so anyone who is going to cause trouble doesn't wait until all mods are off-line to start stirring things up. I've caught a few people who didn't know I was watching. You can always send a PM anyway and if a mod is on-line they will get it immediately.

But if mods were a deterrent wouldn't it be of benefit to be seen?
Rather than giving the impression nobody is around so you can catch a few?

Anyway. Ya'll can do it however you like it... ;)

VBulletin offers a range of options - some boards highlight mods (and admins) in different colours, but the option to remain invisible to other users is still there.

All down to how the board sw is configured.
