Last night Joe the unlucky managed somehow to gash his leg - looks like he's knocked it with the other foot. He wasn't limping or anything but blood was streaming out (looks worse on a white sock) I cleaned it up with baby wipes and applied a thick layer of sudocreme. Should I have bandaged it do you think? We were in the middle of a wet and windy field and the daylight was fading - so I had to act fairly fast. To be honest, I thought that bandaging was a last resort - as I thought if I put it on too tight it wouldn't be any good and too slack and would come undone. I guess its just experience to know these things?
Poor Joe he has to be the unluckiest horse going at the moment. Swear he knew we were cursing about him tho - OH went into his stable to look at him after we'd been moaning loudly about the cost of all this treatment and he was just stood there, head slightly down.....:o OH hugged him - he felt so guilty...........!!!!

no, unless it won't stop bleeding it is best left to the air to scab over. was it a scartch type wound, or a puncture?

You can bet if you'd bandaged it, it'd been off by morning! Or at least slipped everywhere - and dirty. As Mehitabel says, unless it keeps bleeding, I wouldn't cover a small wound. The sudocrem will give a protective layer for a bit too.

Your last sentence made me sniffle - give poor old Joe a hug from us.

Mehitabel - it was more like a scratch, looked like he'd kind of scraped the skin away in a flap (know that sounds yucky but you know what I mean). It looks ok this morning, have cleaned it again and re-applied the cream - made sure with the vet also that his tet was up to date, have read horror stories about horses not being vaccinated.

that's fine then. puncture wounnds need a bit more care, as they have to heal from the inside out and mustn't scab over, but scratches are best left to dryand heal.
