Hi everybodyand greetings from Alaska! Yes we have horses here in alaska, but we board them in igloo stables built out of ice...:D
I am new so forgive if I sound silly... I have a 4 year old percheron gelding (spotted draft) that makes a low Rhythmic kind of squeek when he is at canter or trot... I am pretty sure that this is air in the joint escaping but am not totally sure.... I am gunna get him started this year as he was a rescue last year. I just want to be sure before I start round penning him. I have heard this sound in other horses before, but mostly older ones. Looking for advice cuz vets aint to pleantiful round here....

if you hear it at the trot it might be that your hearing air escaping from his umm parts underneath not sure which part specifically but some geldings make this noise ands it air moving in and out

WELCOME!

Hmmm... are you sure its from the joint?

Geldings also make a funny sound when they're tense and air gets trapped in their sheaths (at least I think thats the reason - someone correct me and post the true reason :D).

If its not that noise, then I'd definately be hunting down a vet. Rather be safe than sorry and risk making something worse.

Gorgeous boy!

agree with the others, but in case you're sure it's not his sheath, a naturopath treatment would help him no end. If there's no practitioners in your area, you could order some joint formula herbs of the internet. It would really benefit him as he's a rescue.

Welcome to the forum too!! :)

Sounds like it is comming from his hip area.. he has allways done it and I have had him sense he was almost 3..... I have heard it before in other horses, especially older ones that dont move around a lot.... It doesnt bother him at all, he spends about 3 hours a day playing with the yearlings.... bouncing around and running all over the place playing bite the butt....

Thanks for the welcome

It's the noise a lot of geldings and stallions make by the description.

Now that I think about it, I am pretty sure that he is just making sheath noise... Most of his buddies are Much Much smaller then him as well as the mustangs that I have delt with in the past.. I am sure that because of his size, and endowment(lack of a better term) the noise is just MUCH more prominent and deeper sounding then I am used to... I turned him out with some of my boarders and while he was playing his boy games he was hanging out and running around and the noise was not there.

Thank you all for the help and replies and making me feel welcome.... I would post Poe's rescue story if anybody wants to read it if you tell me where....
