The 'showing' session, in the sense you mean it, is just starting really - they are usually held outdoor in big feilds with squares sectioned off for the rings, so good weather is needed. Jumping classes and dressage classes have been going on all winter indoors but not that may 'shows'
There's loads of different classes for showing but mostly they're beauty contests for horses - the nicest looking horse that fit the criteria of the class wins. Some classes like Working Hunter are more about the way the horses goes and less about the looks.
You have Breed classes (Mountain and Moorlands and Arabs mostly), Ridden classes (Riding Club Horse, Pony Club Pony), Hunter classes (Working Hunter, Ridden Hunter), In-Hand Classes (for young horses usually) and Novelty classes (Family Horse, Fancy Dress etc)
And then most shows also have a couple of jumping rings, split into Pony and Horse. They start off at the lowest height class and go up through out the day for each class. They usually start off at about 2ft and go up in 3" incraments (so 2'3, 2'6, 2'9 3ft)although most places are changing to metric (55cm, 60cm etc). The classes often have set names like Nursery Novice, Starter stakes, A5 (anyone who gets a double clear in this class comes 1st equal), open etc.
Most places have rossetes for 1st-6th and good family shows also have 'Highly commended' rossests for young riders so they don't get upset. So shows allow you to 'qualify' to go to bigger, higher level shows.
I've usually go to a couple of shows every year and they're good fun. I don't go to win but there is always some sore loosers who will do anything to win:rolleyes:

Ali's very first proper jumping class - she missed the 2' and 2'3 class as she was stuck in another class so has to go straight into the 2'6. She has one run out (her own fault) but did really well otherwise

A 'sore loser' is somebody who, when they don't win, they get all upset and start shouting - "it's not fair" and "My pony should have won that" ... or "I hate my pony, Mummy buy me a better one" ... You know the type of person !!!
Much better to go to the show, enter a class ... ride around with a big cheery grin like this -> :D ... and then hug your pony and give him a carrot no matter what the judge thinks cos you know at heart he's the best pony in the world ;)

Exactly! :D
Pink usually gets placed in the rossetes when I'm riding her but for the last couple of years Ali's been taking her for fun instead. Ali is still a fairly novice rider and because of Pink's size she has to compete against adults, which means she doesn't usually get placed. But she always enjoys herself.
The 'tiny' jump was maybe 1ft (about 30cm) - which was very annoying since the class was MEANT to show that your horse was a capable jumper. Pink only cantered over it (like most normal sensible horses;)) and was marked down for 'not jumping it'. The horse that charged at it but cleared it by miles got a higher placing for the jump:rolleyes: Ali didn't care though - she just likes taking part.

Here's Rosie at a dressage show :
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f135/joePony/Rosie/rosieTrotting.jpg
She managed to spook all around the warmup, then when she went in to do her own show, she entered the arena, spooked a lot and we retired. That's almost the worst possible result. No score. (A worse result would be not getting into the arena, or falling off and getting hurt .... ). So in that picture she is confidently leaving the arena, having lost big-time. But she didn't know that, and nobody told her :)
And she was a very brave girl for going to her first show and not freaking out too badly. So she got lots of hugs and carrots.
So nobody was a sore loser that day. :D
