hi,

i had the vet out to my horse this am as he had a cough and runny nose. He has been dignosed with a low grade virus and is on antiboitics. While she was listening to his heart she mentioned to the person with her (i was at work and the lady who runs the yard was there with him) that he had a heart murmur. i didn't know this and i don't understand excatly what it means and how it affects him. He is extermley fit at the moment and we have been hunting, show jumping, x- country etc and he hardly even breaks into a sweat. He really enjoys his work and at no time seems to struggle or do anything that would make me suspect he has problems. but now i am worried? has anyone got a horse with a heart murmur or know of someone with one that can shed more light on this and help set my mind at rest.

:(

They can mean something and nothing, it depends on the type, did the vet say anymore?

Give him a phone and ask him to elaborate. Heart murmurs on their own with no other symptoms can be innocent. If you were noticing other symptoms I'd be more concerned, but as the horse is fit and well and not prone to gasping for breath on short walks don't worry too much.

But to put your mind at rest phone the vet and ask him exactly what he heard.

It was a bit bad of him to mention it is passing and not throw more light on the subject.

thanks so much for your reply, i wasn't there when the vet was so i couldn't ask then. i had been trying to contact the vet all day and have finally spoke to her. She says its nothing to worry about and that it doesn't change anything. Its just something i should be aware of , incase sedation or anything like that. i had been worrying myslef silly all day and now am very relieved. He just needs to rest till his cold has gone.
