View Full Version : Silly question - but foreign language?

I've recently purchased a Haflinger who was imported from Holland, and it has occurred to me that she probably doesn't understand English!
I know this sounds silly, but would learning a few words such as up or such like for picking up her feet help? I don't think she is being naughty on purpose, although I do suspect sometimes she is pushing her boundaries, but she might not understand what I'm saying as she doesn't understand English!
Any advice useful!

We had a Welsh Speaking Welsh Sec. D and lots of Icelandics, they don't need to understand English, they learn what you want so quickly.

I imported Frits from the Netherlands and he did not understand english but caught on very quickly:D Just keep perservering with your commands and she will get it.
On a similar note I always wonder if he neighs in a foreign language or has an accent. Most horses do not answer him when he nieghs the only time horses have actually talked back was when I took him to the keuring and there were other friesians there:)

Hah, my barn is German, right? And sometimes we get quite a few German speaking horses-where to lunge, they are trained with the equivalent of the German words for "walk, trot, canter" You should see the confused look for the first couple of weeks as the horse tries to understand what the heck the work trot means!

Interesting post.
If we're moving to holland might have to start teaching Tarquin and Ruby dutch in advance.
not sure what they say for 'up' but trot is 'd-rrrrafff' with rolling r, so quite similar to the english ' terrrot'

Fi seems to be multi-lingual - swedish and english. I still use the odd bit of swedish now and then.. sometimes to tell her she is a "bra flicka" (good girl), or tell her to stop something "SLUTA !!"

She seems to be getting it and I am trying to be consistent, but I also think she knows perfectly well what I want is taking the you know what as well!!
I often wonder if they neigh with an accent, bit like birds have a regional accent, oh I need to get out more.:p
