You'll wear out the stair carpet.
Found a really, really old bycyle pump in the shed (its fallen down), its brass. You can borrow that. How about getting a pogo stick and jumping up and down on that? L

Pogo stick, good idea, very taxing, will need you to give me some practical first. :) Used to have a brass pump on my 1924 Rudge bicycle, till one day I lost it trailering the bike back from Oulton Park, oop's, driving to fast again! :o

Monday, riding again. Here's Isis tacked up and waiting for me.
Its getting to be really hard work now, spent a large part of the hour without stirrups in both trott and canter. Trotting around the outside then pulling out and canter a circle in the infield. Phew does'nt half shake you up a bit, but then when we took back the stirrups, my seat, well it just felt so much better and the stirrups felt higher, they had'nt been adjusted. Next we did a figure eight in trott going outside cones placed really deep into the corners, coming out one at a time, transition into canter down the length of the school then circling across through the ride to the other side, still in canter. Sounds a bit dangerous now writing about it but it worked OK.:) Ive learnt to be stronger or is it maybe firmer with Isis and she's going so much better. She seems to enjoy it more too than when she was messing about! A good lesson.:o

Wesnesday second lesson of the week and more jumps, must have cleared a dozen or more now!:) Rode Isis again, she was'nt quite so willing tonight, took a bit of getting going, had to tap her on quite a lot, hesitate to say hit or wack, feel a bit guilty having to do it. Asked the instructor if I was being to hard, she said " if you were I'd take the crop away and wack you), so I guess its ok, but go we did and she enjoys a jump, second time around had to hold her back.:) Had a faller tonight Sarha riding Molly who shyed first time in front of the jump and Sarha landed on the floor, but every thing was ok, no damage. Molly's been off for a while with a leg injury, so she had some extra goes to get back into the swing of it. Another good session, then after untacking and a little brush, we turn them out now, they love to be out in the fields.

Thats a nice photo John, Isis looks full of anticipation:)
Rode Emras a lovely section D welsh cob this evening for the 1st time, he was just so light and agile on his feet. Im struggling to pick a favourite now, Poor Sophie has been on rest for 12 weeks and will be for probably at least another 6, she looked totaly gorgeous just standing in field with friends:].
Sandi there were two riders from USA this evening for two hour ride, one rode western on Mel and her daughter rode Buggsie, both horse again section D's, there such willing horse and no crops or wips allowed! ever!
Good ridding Friday John, and fingers crossed for Laetitia's horse Clover, fingers crossed she is well better now.

Went for an hours hack this morning, first one. :) It was raining first thing but had cleared up by 10 o'clock so just lucky, although it was a bit sticky in all the heat, but lovely to be out on the heath. I rode Frank, he's 15-2 mixed bread geld, lovely lad, smooth as silk in trott and canter but does like to take a bite out of the local flora. :) C'ant wait to do it again.

Here I am mouldering away, reading about your exploits and wonderful progress with your riding skills, and feeling really jealous.
Nag is still off work and has another couple of weeks to go, then hopefully we can then get back into the swing of things. Meanwhile she is waxing enormous with all this grass, and living the life with her boyfriend, with whom she is besotted. Had his owner come over this evening to keep an eye whilst I took her out of the field and out of his vision. I needed to be sure he wouldn't come out over the gate, as I shall be doing some natural horsemanship and loading with her whilst we wait. Her holiday is over. X fingers I can get nag back into shape before our next event, which is a Le Trec. Shall have to find out how far the marathon is, and whether she will be able to manage it.
Must be philosophical about this,as,need to get nag sorted and sound, irrespective of how long it takes, its worth it in the long run. Just frustrating. Cheers, L

Hi Everyone:
I am sorry I never replied to your message Fred. I wasn't notified there were any new messages. I have been working on my journal, off line, about my trip to England. So I just checked my mail box.
Fred. It sounds like I won't be able to do the ride, if it is as fast as you say. I don't know if Alison would be up to it . As, you say it is a lot different compared to the arena and the wide open spaces. I had only ridden inside, at Sutton Coldfield, when I was 11. All of my riding has been outside. I have ridden from sunup to sunset on a private horse in Kentucky but that was 25 years ago. I rode all day in northern Michigan just a few years back but all the riding I have done is with a Western saddle which is made for long days doing round ups. Haha. We will have to see how it goes as it will be another year before we come to England. My son just bought a log cabin on a lot of land so he can have horses. When he buys them we will be doing more riding outside. We will have towait and see. I would love to do that ride at the Chase.
I had a lesson yesterday. It will be my last for a while as Alison will be at her family's cottage all summer and I won't have my buddy for company. We are the only two students in the class. Our regular instrutor is busy in the summer judging shows, so she won't miss us. We did a lot of cantering yesterday it took quite a while to cool our mounts down. Also we had to sit for three beats and go up for two. Has anyone else done that exercise? It was really strange.
Fred, I liked the photo of White Horse and Jonto, Isis is beautiful. You are really doing well with your lessons.
Happy riding to all

Thank you Sandi Isis is lovely, she can be really good when she wants to although she's 18 now, she used to do showjumping and I'm told has been around quite a bit. I will ask about her past exploits.:)
L, try running up and down King Alfred's tower a few times that'll keep you fit. :D W'ont be long before Clover and yourself are back in the cart, couple of weeks soon goes!
Had a bad lesson tonight, rode Quinntessa who just did'nt want to know at all, really hard work. Woud'nt go into the corners, then would'nt do a circle, not a round one anyway, would'nt canter exept for a couple of times when the instructor chased her. Took a short step in trott that was bumpy and difficult to rise to, but did manage to lengthen her stride eventually, bit more comfortable, and so ended the lesson, not a lot done and I'm worn out.

:) camera shy too by the expresion John:D
Sandi, its best you talk to Lisa nearer the time, I missed the last pub ride, ridding lasted nearly 6 hours im told, canters were steady too.
The riders last Thursday evening were from Arizona, and very nice folk too:) we all stood watching the horses grazzing afterwoods, what a great bunch they are.I must ask about posting some photos of the herd.
The White horse came up well, photo was taken on Digital camera, there amazing camera.

Quintessa certainly looks as though she can do 'won't' really well, Jonto, never mind good for the leg muscles. I decline the offer of tearing up and down King Alfreds tower , but thanks for the thought.
So much for the loading practice! I sit at the top of the ramp, nag stands at the bottom and goes to sleep. Any suggestions. L

Have been away for a week, Norfolk. Its been a super week, lotts of sun and really warm for the UK. Did'nt manage to get any riding in though, did call at a yard to ask about a hack, "sorry we've four horses off this week, can do next week". So that was that. :(

Had a realy good lesson tonight, rode Isis, just managed to squeeze one in on Monday to after the drive back from Norfolk. Was given Quinntessa and she was beastly, complete waste of time, would rather forget it. Tonight Isis was lovely, although I'm a bit worn out, dont feel to well, had a headache for much of today, all the excitement and travel has caught up with me I guess, will take a rest tomorrow. We did more work without stirrups, trott and canter, then went on to jumps. We had two this lesson one at each long side of the school, there were only four of us in the ride and so plenty of room. Wish I'd been a bit fitter but enjoyed it anyway.

Nostalgic memories, Jonto. Where is the windmill?
Pleased to hear you had a lovely week.
I can remember, when I used to drive down from Norfolk really early, seeing the racehorses out on exercise and they were against the early morning mist- magic sight.
Good news. Nag is at last sound, and ready to start walk work, will be at least another two weeks before can start increasing the work towards fittening, but we are on our way. YAY. L

Thank you both for your kind thoughts.
Clover can do straight line walking /then trot for the next three weeks. Unfortunately have had to postpone as have a really sore foot, can hardly walk, let alone get up in the cart, or put boots on. So will have to wait a week before we get going. Have had to cancel all our events for July anyway, as there is no way nag will be fit enough. Have resigned myself to this season being a washout, but no big deal, at least nag is O.K. now. L

Poor L, what a time your having, hope your foots better soon, there's still plenty of season left yet for some fun.
Mondays lesson and a new experience tonight. rode Harvey for the first time, He's a big strong lad, 17 hnds and knows it to, likes to be boss, but he's very willing and not at all lazey like Quinntessa. Trouble is he has a long stride and has a bumpy seat so I need some time with him to get used to it. Did not attempt a canter tonight, did sitting trott instead while the others sped on.

Wednesday and second weekly lesson. Rode Isis tonight, lovely evening so outdoors. Did some more jumps, ( just little one's), one on the long side and another on the diagonal, so we did a ride large over the first jump then round again and took the diagonal for the second. All this to a wonderful sunset. The school is on the western slopes of the Staffordshire Moorlands, southern most bit of the Penines, with an open view out across the Cheshire plain to the west. To ride there in the evening as the sun goes down is a privilage.
P.S. Isis was a good girl tonight.

Hello L
Hope the foots better now, how was your outing yesterday?
Monday's round again and another lesson. Rode Harvey for the second time tonight, we are getting on quite well now, have learned how to collect his trot and can sit to it now. Did two canter's to, just a few strides yet. Really pleased, though it was hard work, he's a magnificent horse and a good ride. Feel a sence of achievement coming on tonight!:)

Wednesday and jumping. Just back from the school, had Isis tonight, after a very lethargic start, she can be bone idle when she's in that sort of mood, she woke up and went well. We did a round of three jumps tonight. There were only three of us in the ride, everybody else is on holiday and so plenty of room to play. :)

You are really forging ahead with this jumping, Jonto. Bravo.
Harvey sounds a really good ride, can you get to ride him more often. Strikes me you need to move on from Isis a bit more, especially as she can be a bit indifferent. just a thought. L

Ride Harvey on Monday's at the moment and we dont jump in that group, he's so huge he'd just step over the size of jump we do so far. :D Actually I'm having trouble Wednesday's when we do jump. Am not finding it at all easy in trot, hav'nt got the hang of it yet, am a bit tired to at the moment. Cutting thistles in the field and its hard work, got to get rid of 'em as I'm intending to bale it.

Hello Margaret
I suppose its with just being a beginner. When we were first allowed to try a jump a few weeks ago it was from canter. That was after lots of riding without stirrups and pole work. Now that we are being taught to jump we are being asked to do it from trot and its not the same, much harder. Aproaching the jump in rising trot is ok till its time to take off, then it all seems to be an instant mess, sitting and leaning forward and no time to get everything coordinated, bit frightening. Instructor says its OK, guess I just need more practice to get used to it.

Hello All:
First I would like to say thanks for the birthday wishes. I have to say I don't feel any different.
I have been without a computer since June 19 and had 65 new messages when I finally got back on line.
A lot has happened in the last two weeks on the message board and in my life. My 10th grandchild was born three and a half weeks early and my son moved into his new home. They don't have horses yet. Hahaha. They have to learn how to handle the two children first.
I went to a horse show at the school. The children who had participated in the two week camp, showed what they had learned. It was nice to see the future horsepeople compete. A 7 year old girl who lives by my daughter won a pink ribbon. It was nice seeing Zeus and his girth sores are all heal. He is back to normal and jumping in shows I gave him a big hug and a mint.
I won't be riding until the end of August. It is too hot for me to enjoy it. I think I would rather ride in the freezing cold than in 92 degree weather. If Kenny does get horses this summer, I will ride down the tree lined country roads at a snails pace.
My cousin who lives in Berkshire sent me some old photos of me with my BD present. There was a lovely photo of me on a horse taken 40 years ago. I had forgotten all about those photos. They sure brought back the memories. Also I was 30 pounds lighter.
It is Independence Day over here today. It is calm right now but soon the fireworks will be going off. My dogs hate the noise so I keep them in the basement. Johnny, my son is in New York and I have his dog,Snoopy. He is all right in my bedroom because he is deaf and won't be able to hear the racket.
Happy riding, Sandi
Laetitia
4th Jul 2003, 09:24 PM
Jonto, jumping from trot is progression and precision, so stay with it , it will come. Much, much harder than from canter, great achievement tho', well done.
Sandra, congrats on the arrival of your 10th grandchild, what a thrill.
I agree with you, think I would melt in those temperatures, as for riding forget it. I'm sure the horses don't enjoy it much either. Here in England we complain if it goes above 70, mind you, we do have a very humid heat which is very trying. We also complain if it rains!
Went up to the Royal show, had a lovely day. Watched the driving and rubbernecked at everything from heavy horses to Irish clog dancing, to rabbits(human) lolloping around to Indian dancing. Also bought an enormous pool for my geese, which we lugged around -yes, it did go in the car, eventually. The geese won't look at it. Ate vast amounts of bacon butties, yummy, walked miles and came home. L

John, Do you sit for the last couple of strides or are you still in rising trop. I find it imposible to jump unless I sit for the last 2 or 3 strides in trot. This gives you time to balance yourself and get into position for the jump. Think about it, if you are in rising trot and you are at the rise, how can you go forward to jump, it is vertually impossible.
When jumping, if you start the jump in the right position, the horse will keep you there, but it is about balance. You can practice this at home, if you have the time of course, by standing with your legs about the width of your hips, then bend you knees and at the hips, to roughly the bend when you are in jumping position, and try and keep your balance. Once you have your balance doing this, it should help with your balance when riding over the jumps. What is important, is that you keep your back straight, no bends, and your head up looking were you are going.
To a horse, a jump is a large canter stride and isn't a problem, it is us that it is a problem for, because we are not balance properly to cope with the change in gait.
If you can cut the thistles before they seed, then you will have less to do next year and eventually your field will be clear of them. Much cheaper than weed killers, but does take longer.:D
I know I don't post often, but I do read all the posts and look forward to seeing the progress that you are all making.

I'm waiting to get my fields cut. They have already been topped once this year, but wasn't very well done as I wanted the rough grass cut, and the remainder topped. Ask for the moon! Hiring a machine and going to DIY, so will ensure they're done how I want. Hopefully in the next week or so, otherwise will have to take hay which I don't want -its pretty poor stuff. No, I won't be careering around out of control on a tractor cutter, have a friend. Nags are so FAT, the racehorse needs the weight, but the carthorse - no way. I'll never work this adipose off her! Thats her holiday for the year, will have to keep her going through the winter now to keep fitness. Having a lousy summer. L

Thanks Tumbleweed
Thats were the difficulty is when to sit, to late and your rising when you need to lean forward, to early and you loose pace. Thanks for your helpfull tips, practise and more practise, with all the help you give, dear friends. Thus is the trials of being a learner, get on with it I will and its fun along the way.
Well L
Know what you mean about getting the grass topped, going through it myself now, its ok when your just talking about it, but another world when you actually ask for it done! Had a lovely hours hack yesterday with my neighbour Christine she's coming on a bit and we did a few stides of canter, she's getting to be quite a hand at it now.:) Rode Frank again, very nice. :)

Congratulations Sandi:)
L and John, it sounds like your needing some sheep, they sure keep the grass low.Good luck with Clover.
I must get over John, its looking like Cristine has found just the right place for sensible canter:)
We had a good ride today, was on QT a fab sec D welsh cob, we happened across some riders doing a fun ride{loads were at it:D }we stopped to admire a stunning dapple grey arab with plaited mane, its a good job the cobs don't wolf whistle because fro sure they had spotted a stunner:D
We happened across four young stags too, we stopped to watch them less than 50ft away, I think the horse were thinking 'hey you guys? where's your tack:D '
Anyway, tonight I was walking on the Chase, I could not believe where some riders on the fun ride have been cantoring, on the rock hard stone paths, poor horse:( will sure be feeling it now.
Theres great chunks in the paths and there like concrete. Some folk:mad:

Another week has begun, had two rides today. Went to my school this morning to help with a teacher training class, six of us in the ride, rode Isis and learned a bit from the "boss" who took the class. Went along again tonight for my regular lesson and was given Quinntessa. My she's a powerfull girl when she's woken up, we did good, although it was hard work, got a super trott out of her and managed to do a twenty metre c on her left rein, which is her worst, got a comment on that. A tiring day but a good one. :)

Fred, in case you missed them, I have two overfed Wiltshire Horn! They're great to have as are fairly maintainance free - don't have to shear them, they lose their fleece naturally. The Chase sounds glorious, might get up there, one day, you never know.
Jonto, all this riding, you'll get bandy legged like the cowboys. L

Just back from Wednesday's lesson and no Jumping. :( Sob :( Sob. Worked on the flat, recap on balance and position. Rode Isis, got her to go really well, kept closing up in trott and had to circle away a few times to keep the spacing. Must work on getting her trott collected a bit. We went around rising and then half circling away at random in canter. That's after a lot of work without stirrups, then finished of over three poles in trott and jump position with a transition to canter on the exit. Managed to do it all eventually, must learning something as I can get Isis on through the lazey bit and generate some activity now. :)

Jonto, this is where I bow out. When are you going to
do your first dressage test? Go on, I dare you.
By the sound of it, you are well up to it.
Just to really irritate you, jumpng is not the B all. All the basics are though - a good walk, good transitions etc. When you have your own horse you'll find that these fundamentals are crucial to achievement and ultimately jumping.
(just winding you up).
Aren't we having the most glorious weather. L

I'm probably giving a false impression of my ability, I'm just still a novice and struggling with transitions and oh collecting and extending paces, think its more by luck than experience. Had a hack yesterday lunchtime with Christine and was it hot, not just the sunshine there was a breeze and even the air was hot. Rode a new horse for me, Harry a bay gelding about 16hnds. He's a wimp, frightened of the fly spray, they told me to leave my crop in the car as he's frightened of that to! He is easy to ride, quite forward going and no trouble at all. Did some trott but could not get up to canter, none off us, there were four, it was so hot the horses did'nt want to. So we just walked around and enjoyed the scenery and the sunshine.:)

I'm way far from where you are, out in Colorado, USA. I'm approaching 50, and just approaching my life-long love of horses altogether. Just sit deep, relaxed, & enjoy.
I'm glad you're coming back, after such a time-span! That in itself is proof of great courage. Good for you!
(I wish I could get in touch w/someone that's a bit like me; never was able to be around horses...everyone I read about in books or wherever, has come back, or got RE-involved; no one seems to be just starting, at so-called middle age...)
So, congratulations, and much luck!

Well you two have a long way to go to catch up with me, I'm sixty! :p Wish I'd done it years ago. :( There's an age gap of a good thirty years in the two lesson groups I attend, does'nt seem to matter we are all mates and do hacks together too when our time off allows. Have had a lesson tonight, in fact I've only missed one monday so far this year. Rode Harvey, the big lad, about 17hnds. Instructor Maureen said, I want no messing about tonight, you worked hard on control last week and I want good quality transition's, two steps of trot and straight into canter. Had a bit of intense direction on leg aid's, think I've progressed a bit tonight. Thing is when I've built up some activity, (in walk in this case), to stop the nudging on or kicking as its usually called and just hold the leg on tight. Then when I feel the pace slowing, bit like a clockwork spring winding down and coming towards a halt, a couple of quick sharp nudges and hold the leg on again till he slows next time and again, keep on , like being a bully. Maureen said, " he's got to know what you'r asking him to do" and It worked for me as he went on well. Forward going, I think Its called. Harvey's a big lad with a very long stride, takes a bit of time to get used to it, his trot is bumpy and he falls into canter, its a bit like a leap forward, then a long rocking gait, quite different to the other horses I've tried, but I did it. First canter transition I hardly found my seat, second was a bit wild, covered a bit of ground. Third and fourth, well I've learned a bit more tonight and Harvey's a good mate. :)

Oh, thank you Doug! Now I don't feel so lonesome, if there's thousands!! Good to know I'm very far from alone in this!
And Jonto, in reading your post; I gleaned something w/your canter description...that's just what Pluto the Lippizanner did when I first tried the canter: leapt off like a ship at sea on a huge crest, then when he came back down I was so petrified I couldn't continue at all, let alone discover what "canter" feels like (this is when this very good school horse went right to center as he knew I'd lost it, and I got my quote!)
Then, I busted the ankle, so cantering has become my combination nemesis/goal. Yes, I'm a greenhorn, as the Westerners would say, and I'm so glad I'm not alone. When I can canter (maybe pony Cinnamon will teach me!), there will be big smilies on this site. I'm gonna hang an admiration tag on myself Wednesday for you, as in "Hey, this lady in England is 60, and horse-savvy, and I'm not (yet), but I'll get there...so, get that funky leg into that stirrup, and SMILE!":p
What "is" Harvey, that makes him such a big boy?
and,oh, a p.s.: one time Pluto did this big spook at Val moving a kid's jumping block. I went right with him,(ship metaphor again! Read big storm!) just barely losing a stirrup. I wasn't scared at all in the moment, it's like I knew what to do, but, damn, I wish I knew how I knew it! This is why I think Val is so strange at me at times, and why Major looks at me in disgust: it's like they know that I "know", but I don't realize yet that I know! I bet that makes sense to y'all...!

I think we all feel same way when we start, I know I did, everywhere I looked there were !! young looking people around me down I think as low as 5yr olds on their mini ponies
(our junior school has I would guess some 30 + ponies)
and it all made me feel i was only older one around but now when I helpout as a groom I chat with our more elderly riders. So I guess we actually are about just over midway in the scale of things. Lots of weekend enquiries are made by people at our end of the scale. Anyway what does age mean..........I have shelved my rockclimbing at moment because horses have a higher priority ( I got on my first one 18months ago.)

well 4 years anyway :o

Jonto,
Slow the trot down by shortening the stride, before asking for canter, horses are usually off balance when they jump or fall into canter. By slowing the trot down, you help keep him balanced. When you want him to canter, after you have shortened the trot, check your position, half halt, check position, bring your outside leg back, and use it.:D Keeping your inside leg on to keep the impulsion going. This is better done going into a corner because the corner will help you to shorten his trot stride, then still on the bend, ask for the canter.

Thanks Doug!! You're right, age doesn't mean a whole lot! Maybe, physically a bit weirder for those of us who have ignored our bodies...but when it comes to horses, I think I'm about 11 going on twelve. Rock climbing?! Geez, I just need to get back to hiking!
Oh, Laetitia!! Jonto's a guy...I'm so sorry, Jonto, I hope you read this! How embarrassing to be caught in my own chauvinism, when I pretty much think I'm cool...ooops. Many apologies....
I had a gorgeous German Shepherd one time, who a brief aquaintence insisted was male, because Liberty Belle was so big, strong-shouldered, muscular, and well...German Shepherd. He had to believe she was a he because of the aforementioned, & I guess I assumed jonto was a woman, because he just sounds so cool, in-tune with horses, & courageous in on-going endeavors. Oops II, shame on me!
As for inhibitions,Laetitia, you got that one right,big-time. Onward & upward, from littleGreenhorn...:p

Hello folks, a message from Mr Jonto.
No need to apologise Little H, well how would you know and it does'nt matter anyway, as long as I've two legs to hold round my horse. Harvey's owner says he's "middle to heavy weight hunter, with a touch of Irish draught I think", he's a bay and a very hansome lad.
"It aint 'alf hot 'ere" and sticky too, sky's looking a bit black now guess we are going to have to sit through a storm. Donner und blitzen!
Wednesday night is jumping class and I've done a bit more tonight. Had Isis, if you look back a few pages in the thread LH you will find a picture of her, she was'nt to keen tonight its so hot even though we were outside there's no breeze. Still she went on well though I think we were all flagging a bit. Its hard work still jumping from trott, but got one right. Just went with the motion, you know when it works, you can feel the harmony, very satisfying. Having some success with collecting and keeping the impusion going now T, thanks for the advise, its being able to give the horse aids he can understand, rather tan banging about all over the place as you tend to do as a beginer. Quite an extensive subject in its own right and there's a lot of learning to do. I'm off now rather tired.

Thanks, Mr. Jonto!~ It sounds like things went well tonight; good on us beginners! Harvey sounds beautiful; I've got a weakness for Draughts & their crosses...silly, as I'm tall but little (Val says I'm "deceptively" long in legs&arms, but only 5'6ish..) There's a Draught (maybe X, I just know he's big & blond/dappled) at a rescue farm, right close to the stables, that I always look for when I drive by. Sigh. Go figure that the REALLY big ones don't seem to scare me, but mustangs do... I've had a crush on this guy for months!
There is alot of learning to do, but I do what I can do...
Talk to y'all later...;) Colorado, in my part anyway, is gonna get some storms, too, must be a trail of the hurricane down south; small world!..am off, too, have to get ready for work tomorrow...

Yes, aren't the flies really, really bad this year. Nag gets quite paranoid and she's wearing a flymesh rug! She is also leaning on the gate and scratching. There is going to be one gigantic crash when she dismantles the whole thing.
Sounds like a lovely ride, jonto. I've got a sore foot again, which is a nuisance. Even if I don't go in tomorrow - can't get my shoe on- won't be able to do anything here either. Not having a good summer. Hopefully the autumn will be more fun. L

Poor L, poorly foot again, really must get it in hand, (that does'nt sound quite right somehow), before the seasons over. What with all the trouble with Clover and then yourself, you'r missing so much this year.
Monday night poped over to the school again, flat work Monday's. Bit cooler here now thank goodnes, 'cause we did a whole lot of hard work. Rode harvey again, we are becoming mates now, did lotts of transitions, walk, trott, canter, all possible combinations, with varying degrees of success. Very taxing and very enjoyable.

Hello, all! I went to the stables today,& to my great suprise got to get on Teddy (too tall for pony, too small in stride for horse, so he's being sold at the end of show-season...bummer;very nice animal...) We walked around just fine, but I got scared at the trot, as his is bumpy, so Brenda put me on the lounge, where I could grab mane & not worry about steering. Much better, wore myself out, & got for a few moments to remember the fun! Got dizzy, & appalled at my muscle weakness (I was never "Rambo" in the first place...), but did mount from the ground on my silly ankle. I'm suprised by the fear; good thing I didn't do the injury horse-involved, that would've been worse. Told Brenda I seem to have a sudden fear of heights, which I never had before (Teddy's the tallest mount I've been on so far since the accident), but she said it's likely more a feeling of "I can't get hurt again." Very interesting morning, but proud of myself. Brenda's expecting me next Wednesday, with Teddy again, but I need to ask Val for chores, too. I'm not paying(can't, at present) for the time these people are giving me, so have to give back, somehow, otherwise it just doesn't feel right....out of room on this post, so going to do another one...

Oh my!, am I a happy boy tonight!
Rode Harvey in the jumping lesson, he's fantastic! We finished over a horizontal pole at about two feet, a first for me. We warmed up, did a few exercises, transitions and figures, then tried a twenty metre circle in canter, managed a good one at second attempt. Then we moved on to trotting poles after which up went the jump, crossed poles at first. I was a bit worried on the aproach, wondering what was going tio happen as he's awe inspiring, huge, powerfull and agile, I held on to his neck strap,( he wears a martingale), but he just poped over it was so easy. What a mount, he's so good, a gentle giant, wish I could bring him home.
Little H, when I first rode Harvey he bumped me about a great deal too, I think mybe its characteristic of larger horses with a longer stride. I had to work on it a bit to find my seat, but you do get it after an hour or two. Perhaps someone with more experience could comment on this. Once again , oh boy, what a night!

Thanks for all your kind thoughts. Foot is much better, so probably work tomorrow, for a while at least, see how it goes.
To be honest, would be a trifle windy riding nag bootless, her feet are humungous. She always knows when I've got slip- ons on, as she always aims for my feet, then laughs uproariously when I scoot out of the way.
Sounds like a super ride, Jonto. L

28th Jul 2003, 08:36 PM
Have had two friends have rescue horses from charities. Both stayed with me. They were both lovely animals, with beautiful manners, but both were retired eventers. Not suitable for novice riders, only in the fact they were very, very forward going and being very well schooled a trifle quick in their responses. So if you do go down that route, and I'm not saying don't, make absolutely sure they know exactly what your level and capabilities are, so you're not overhorsed. They are very particular, and come and have a look round at where you are going to be keeping the horse, and what equipment you have, ie. grooming kit. They will also take the horse straight back if its not suitable or is poorly. Worth enquiring. L

There's so many openings to explore in looking for a horse, I've no experience at all but decision time's only round the corner now. The charity option is worth exploring, would feel good to give a home to a horse in difficulty. Think I'd prefer to take a loan first to gain some experience in homing and care. Please correct me If I'm in error.
I'm just back from the school again, Monday's flat work. Feel quite priviliged as I've been trusted with Harvey again. We worked hard and crammed a great deal into the hour, walk to canter, circles in canter. Later took up the stirrups and did poles in trot and canter in jump position, bit tired after all that, but it was fun.

Went to the barn today early. Major's half-owner handed me the horse and so "go for it!" So, I did. Brenda was schooling her horse, so I was on my own, and really liked it. First time on Major since the accident, first time on a horse at all (Major is an Appendix, thoroughbred/quarterhorse). I made sure my hands were quiet yet firm, and we walked and posted in the trot, both directions. She's fussier on the left, so got a work-out with my left leg and right-reining, to keep her to the rail. Got to concentrate on just feeling her movement, and relaxing my back and shoulders. I did good. She did good. She leaned her head into my shoulder when we were done, so that was very nice. Almost got into a canter when her trot was going well, but stopped it, since I haven't done that yet. I'd like to do that on my own, but still fearful..it'll come (somehow would rather been on a straight-away, so don't have to worry about the corners; I might ask Brenda to lounge me there..) Whew...hope all is well with everyone!

Little H, canter's easy once youv'e broken through the barrier and done it, the transitions are the hard bit, down is the one that can be a bit dangerous, as if your seat is not right you can be off. Your instructor will have you doing it when she thinks you are ready. Have been for my Wednesday's lesson, thats the one in which we jump. Only three of the regulars there tonight, due to holidays, so two new girls were booked in, they are sisters and have not ridden for some time. So we had to do a bit of recap and did'nt progress any further with the jumping tonight, but did get a couple in over crossed poles at about 18 inch's just at the end of the lesson. Rode Isis and she was OK, she can go quite well when she wants to, a dear old mare.

Thank you, Jonto...& it's the "down" I found so scary on Pluto the Cirque de WonderLippizan; at least when I felt it coming on Major it was only 10 feet to the ground instead of a 20 foot plummet! Exaggerating of course, but there it was..that huge (to me) dip in motion; you're right, it's my seat, which I've just discovered can be settled lower into my back than I thought..when I found that, time before last, Brenda said my back was straight, even though I felt a bit slumped (gee, that might just be relaxing into things..) I sure hope I can ride again this Wedsday, & work what I think I've just discovered, but going to get to the barn early, & find what chores need to be done, to "pay" for what's being offered to me. Bet it's time to clean saddles, or I'll find something, for sure..Monday night, Val has a 6pm class, that I want to go start watching. It's my "friday", so seems like a good thing to do.
I'm glad Isis does well for you, and seems like your Wednesday night class, if not eventful, was satisfactory. One lesson at a time,eh?

I've been thru it all, showjumping, dressage (well sort of dresssge!) western riding etc. At the moment, I've torn all the ligaments in my legs through exercising violently!!! I have a 12.3hh native gelding and yesterday, I couldn't get off him my leg hurt so bad. Anyway, I leant forward, put my arms round his neck and slid off him. I fell on the ground by the side of him. Hello Everybody. Its Monday, took another lesson tonight, its about ninety degrees here and humid to, not very comfortable. Had Harvey tonight, he was feeling the heat to, but he's a super lad, would not have missed it for the world. We took it a little easier than usual and did critic's on little things, the niceties of a good seat and developing the aids a bit more. Managed some forehand turns, thats how we changed rein tonight and did some canter to about three times I think from memory. We did transitions up from trot and from walk to. Hello,all!..and Sandra, I love that station too! Pick up all kinds of things to think about!
I got to the barn early today, swept out the tack room, & had just finished cleaning my 3rd saddle, when Brenda asked if I wanted to ride Major. So I got myself tacked up, then her, & we had quite the work-out! She hates to go left around the arena so much, I think next time I'll start there, instead of the easy way. But Brenda pushed me to push her, & we finally got into some good, fast trots, & I decided to do the 2 point since the first time since my accident; went 3 times around, 'till the ankle hollered (well, it hollered at 2, but so what...) She noticed the fear has gone, & I said, yeah, next fear is the canter...but she said we can do that on a lounge, & that's perfect; I just need to feel it first, w/out worrying about cornering & keeping Major's head-silliness in check (we had that issue today, of course, plus head plunging; but she knew I was tired & had lost the focus...I held her head while the next student got her saddle, & apologised to her if I'd been rough on her mouth; she seemed to forgive me, & settled her head into my arm while I talked...this is a good horse.)
Talked w/a manager at work, who's a horseman, re my canter fear: that sudden drop at first. He said to remember it's just fear of falling, & the horse isn't going to fall; hold w/my knees, & pretend the reins are a cup of coffee that I don't want to spill. Sounds like a couple of images that might work for me! Onward & Upward! Back to work tomorrow, but went Monday night to just watch lessons, & that was really nice, so will keep that up for my "friday" after work. Hope all is well with everyone!

Your doing allright Little H. Have you done any sitting trot? When you've done sitting trot your ready to try canter again, its no big deal, you just have to take the plunge and do it. Try in the indoor school where you have walls for the horse to follow, do working trott rising down the long side to the corner then try for canter, sit for two beats then outside leg back and kick with both. Rise to the beat to come back down to trott and remember shoulders back and weight into the heels, you'll love it. (Hope I've got it right instructors, please comment).
Took my Wednesdays lesson tonight, its really hot and sticky here still. Class was held indoors and I was given Harvey again, I'm so lucky he's a fabulous lad, we both wilted in the heat but managed canter practice, did another twenty metre circle and we poped over a couple of little jumps towards the end. Then put 'em all out for the night. Forcast is the heat wave will be with us here for another week.

Thank you,Jonto, and have sat the trot pretty well..so well, in fact that Val pre-accident put me to canter on Pluto...that's when I got very afraid of the motion. But, sat trot several times today, before posting & urging Major forward. My seat & balance are probably better than I think, & I've printed out this page to better think about & absorb your advice...thank you! Need to visualize, then really see it, so thanks for the task I've set myself to for the coming week ( a 45 minute bus ride up to work is a good time for this!) I've a feeling canter is coming, soon...
Oh, it's hot and sticky here too! Your class sounds great; easy-going in this heat, but productive, too. I had such a fight w/Major's head thing, & Brenda said sometimes lessons are good, sometimes bad...but I told her there's no bad lesson...I learn something every time. Get a yoga tape and practice the stretching and balancing and this will help you a lot. Strong abs is a must also. My husband and I are in our 50's and just started riding again. My husband has even been inspired to lose 25 lbs so he would not be to heavy to rent a horse since a lot of places have a weight limit.

.....Its been a lot of work and things around the house have been neglected. On Tuesday trying to catch up with the gardening, I came of the step ladders, about six feet, hedging, stretching out to far I suppose. Knocked myself about a bit, cuts and bruises, then last night a gruelling lesson. regular instructor on holiday and had Maureen standing in, lasted nearly an hour and a half and intensive to. Finished with jumping imaginary ditches marked out with poles on the floor. Somewhat stiff and sore this morning. :( :p

National holiday here yesterday. School made up a ride from the the pupils who were not on holiday, ten of us there were, bit crowded. After all the hard work at home and my bit of an accident did'nt have the heart or any energy to put into it. Harvey seemed half asleep to, we just followed the others round aimlessly. Trott and canter, what a mess, just no coordination, terrible really, still we soldierd through. Must take a holiday.:(

Hell Jonto
Sorry to hear about your mishap with the ladder. I too have had a spill off a ladder a while back. So my son John tells me he will trim the hedge for me but being in a hurry to get the clippings in the trash. Here they pick up vegetation once a month and I don't like it sitting around. I still do it myself. The trouble is we still think we are in our forties not sixties. Haha
Kenny bought a horse! A two year old standardbred that will be racing three miles from my home on Friday. I had been emailing him all the ads I found for a good jumper, hunter dressage types, so what does he do he buys a ruddy race horse. His wife use to ride at boarding school back east and I understand is quite the rider. She is going to be in charge of this horse as Kenny is too busy with his business. She has made all the arrangements for boarding and transporting. I will let you know how the horse does in it's very first race.
If the weather is cooler this Sunday I will probably resume riding. It has been as hot as heck here,as it has been over there. My cousin lives near Reading and she says the heat has been terrible. She is having to throw water on the walk so her old Greyhound can go out to do her business.
Jonto. if you ride tomorrow hope it is enjoyable and you are all healed. It is no fun riding if you are sore. At our age we are sore without riding. Haha. I have been having trouble with my hip again. I am hoping when I start riding it will ease up a little. It didn't bother me too much last winter and spring. Maybe riding is good for it!
Happy riding,
Sandi

Back to hard work again :( , did'nt have a ride at all last week whilst away. Up to the school tonight for another grueller:) . Had Harvey, its like sitting on top of a mountain, towering above everyone else, he's huge. I'd lost the plot a bit two weeks ago, after falling and was hurting a bit, but I seem to have got it back together again tonight, had a lot of fun. There were just seven of us in the ride, so not to crowded. We did some work without stirrups, then moved on to canter practice, finishing over poles, got a really good strong canter and kept it going for a bit. He's not easy to sit to in canter but when you have it he's magnificent.
Fred, how did you do in the sheriffs ride?

Been reading JONTO'S exploits in riding. Must say I have found it fascinating! Read all the way through from the beginning, took me two nights! Eye's held open with match sticks;) . Just restarted riding myself after a long time. Took it back up a few months ago and had a real bad fall (Couldn't walk properly for 3 weeks!). Two day's before I fell "Little Miss Confident Here" bought a beautiful Irish Hunter called "Molly". Now I'm having to go for personal tuition to get my confidence back! Third lesson to-day..... Still feel a bit unsure. Ah well, I'm sure it will come:)

Well folks, it was the 450th year of the Sheriffs ride, its never missed a single year.
15 horse entered from our ridding centre John, they looked stunning:cool: 80 horse in total took part.
The Sheriff rode a horse named Minne who has done 10 sheriffs rides.
The riders completed the 20 mile route around the City of Lichfield and what a spectacular sight seeing all those horse next to Lichfield Cathedral.
Im hoping that I can do it next September, to be honest I didn't think im quiet ready to be galloping amongst 80 horse:eek: this year.
Anyway,I helped as much as I could washing horses so they looked their best, Im hopless washing horses tail though.
On Saturday I watched the ride and tried to be usefull too.
Its a wonderfull tradition:)

Well IB, I feel quite gratified that someone will spend two nights reading through my humble exploits. Thank you.:) Do let us now how you go on. Just back from my Wednesdays lesson, jumping class. Rode Harvey again, we are expected to get warmed up and moving forward within minutes now, so as to get on to the exercises. Its going to be some lessons jumping and some doing flat work prep now. Tonight we jumped, eight in the ride in the indoor school. Did transitions from rising trott to canter, then back to trott and on again till the instructor was satisfied we had enough control, then the jumps went up, still just crossed poles at about two feet. Harvey was a bit of a wimp tonight and refused at the first three attempts, not his usual self at all and a new experience for me, managed to stay on,:o :p got him to go over at the next attempt. We finished off with two jumps, one parallel to a side then a half circle and another on the diagonal. We did a fifteen metre circle in trott, then left when called to take the jumps. Trott into the first jump then canter round the half circle and down the diagonal to the second, had got Harvey wound up by now and it was quite a ride!:)

Its been a super day here, warm and sunny. Went for my lesson tonight and we rode outdoors, though it was quite dark by eight o'clock when we began. Six of us in the ride and I had Harvey again, he was a bit of a pain tonight. Would not go forward at all to begin with so had to be a bit on the firm side with him, then he did show some activity but was then a bit skitish shying or jumpy at the sight of anybody and anything. Still persevered and got some transitions and a nice long canter eventually. He's a lovely lad when he's a good boy, out in the feild with his mates now till morning.

Hello Everybody, been missing for a few days, very busy painting the house. Took my two lessons as usual. Wednesday last had Isis who was being a pain at first as her her way, needs a firm leg. She does a lovely canter though and is good at going up and down a gear, really gets into her stride when the jumps come out and finished with a few, just a couple of feet.:) Last night Monday rode Harvey again, there's such a lot of him, over 17hdn's. He knows he's the biggest in the class and is the boss, so thinks bother this I'll just laze about and do what I want. Am learning how to be a big bully, very pushy and bossy, (bit like some neighbours I have). Maureen the instructor says "he's just messing about, he'll get away with it if he can, bully him, give him a whack". And so we did a lot, sitting trot, difficult, very bumpy. Large in rising trott with three ten metre circles in sitting trott at the three letter's along the long side of the school, rising along all the straight bits.:) He's just as hard to sit to in canter as in sitting trott, he would not go at first just broke into a run, would not go on at all from walk, had to do it from rising trott did eventualy get good one all the way down one side and along the width of the school. It was a wild ride, he seems to leap forward with every stride.

Another 2/52 then I'll be able to tell you all about my exploits. No doubt it will rain continuosly now until April. Still look on the bright side. Clover doing well, tail healing and she's not looking quite so fat - the grass is falling off a bit now we've had a couple of frosts. L
jonto
24th Sep 2003, 09:40 PM
Its been pretty close to freezing her to L, when the weather begins to turn it seems to happen all at once, still we've had a good run this year. Been to the school again tonight, was given Isis. Now Isis can be a bit lazey, but tonight she did me proud. Its been one of those better lessons, she has gone forward well from the start. We've had good transitions and a lovely canter finishing with a small course of four jumps. One on a long side which we started and finished over, two on the diagonals over which we did a figure of eight in the middle. Only one riding at a time with the others parked in the corners, ther were seven in the ride. The only time Isis let me down was at the first attempt at the course when passing the others standing in the corners put her off a bit and we lost the impulsion, she flopped over the first and coming round to the second I could'nt get her wound up again and she refused. So back to the start and off we went in a grand trott, second time we made a decent job of it. All in all one of those better lessons, certainly gives you a lift as you feel you've achieved something. :)
Laetitia
25th Sep 2003, 09:57 PM
That sounds a really good lesson, Jonto. Very gratifying when everything goes well, does give one a buzz does it not. Horses will be a bit sharper now its cooler.
Must plan to have nag clipped otherwise she will sweat her way through the winter and loose condition. Must also get tne winter hay in before I get caught out and snowed in.
Anyone want any ducks? L
jonto
30th Sep 2003, 09:24 AM
Can't ride ducks L. Try Bernard Mathews. Had another good lesson last night. Indoors eight in the ride, so not to crowded, rode Harvey, had an argument with him right from the start and boy did he go!:) When he's wound up he has a magnificent trott, such long leggs, passes everybody else. Have to work on his canter a lot more, there's so much movement in his back he does throw me about, did get a length. He has such a long stride he finds it a bit difficult in the school. I've seen him out hacking so I know he does canter well, love to try it but I dought I could do it yet, probably be off on my bum!

Welcome tubby and thank you, nice to hear from you, we ar'nt that far appart I'm right by the Cheshire border in North Staffs. Hav'nt heard from Yorkshire or Mitchigan for a while hope everything allright. Had another first rate ride tonight, had Harvey again, must take his picture for you. There were seven in the ride and it was one of those nights when everybody had a good time. Did canter without stirrups:o and put him over a few little jumps again :) . We had two jumps on the short diagonals, ninety degrees included angle, we started from a corner over the first to the centre on the other side then round the other end of the school and back over the other diagonal. Second time round we started from the same corner to the opposite centre again then had to turn straight on to the other diagonal over the second jump finishing at the corner at the other end off the side we started from, hope that makes sense. It was a bit tight into the approaches, much more so than we've done before, everybody did it without any misshaps and Harvey really rose to the occasion, good lad!:D

Hello, back from a day or to away. Went to the school yesterday evening. Had Isis, have not ridden her for some time. She's my first horsey love, my first ride, lovely old girl, but bone idle when she's in control!:) My early lesson's when I had her she would just pull up and stop, I could shout and kick and shove but she just stood there. :) My did she go last night, different girl altogether. We did lots of work without the reins, in sitting and rising trott, "dont worry about where your going". I got in some canter to, a lot more than Harvey can manage in the school. A good lesson, makes up hugely for last week.:)

Hello all, here I am, back again. Apparantly this machine had something in it that kept destroying itself, sort of self destruct!
Have missed you all. Got a nag yet Jonto? Isis going well for you indicates how much your riding has come on. Isn't that super.
Tell me how to access pm's as this site has changed a lot, and being a computer prat can't find it.
At last have nag up and running. Bliss.Temptation to do too much as she is so keen and jolly. Reckon she must have been feeling under par all this time with her tail and a low grade infection. Vet out tomorrow for the final check, but its all looking really good. My farrier really cheered me up. he said where's her tail gone? after I'd told him the sorry tale (!) he said he reckoned she looked really smart. So I looked at her in a more objective manner and thought 'yup he's right' she does look smart. Also on the upside, it won't take me 2 hrs to wash prior to a show.
Riding tomorrow, will keep you all posted. Cheers L

PJ looks super, Jonto. How old is he? Did you get much background info from his owner? Have you an instructer/friend who can come and give you some start up help with him. Give him time to settle in and get to know you.
Nag clipped y'day, so even more of an excuse for her to belt along. Have got some lessons booked for next week, instructer is coming here. I must find a bit of leather to go round her vast neck, for me to use as a neck strap.

I started riding in my mid 30's and was immediately hooked. I now have my own guy, and after a rough start, we are finally communicating. I actually had some regrets during the first year (confidence struggles. Did I do the right thing? My horse hates me!); but one day it just "clicked". Oh I still have my bad rides, but they are less frequent, and they don't devastate me the way they did before.
There is a good group at the barn, all over 50 and we go on trails and enjoy each other's company. I am the youngest in the group at 39. I look forward to many many years of enjoyment on my horse.
