I have been riding side saddle for 3 years after breaking my leg and finding that I could not ride cross-saddle when starting to ride again. (Bits of metal and screws on the inside of my knee). Luckily I had just moved to Hampshire, England and found that the nearest riding stables was owned by Mrs Betty Skelton, President of the Side Saddle Association. When it was found that my leg swelled up too much Mrs S. refused to let me go and put me on one of her side saddles. I have not looked back. If any of you out there are interested in having a go at side saddle riding or would like to ask Mrs S. some questions I would be pleased to pass on any messages and let you know where you can get some good instruction. By the way Mrs S. is 90 and still riding both side saddle and cross-saddle.

What a character Mrs. Skelton is! they don't make 'em like her anymore. My own side-saddle teacher was Mrs. Jackie Bredin, one of the founders of the Sidesaddle Association. Another real 'one off'. She used to bring her cheroots and gin bottle with her! It was she who indirectly got me really involved with Classical Equitation. She didn't know it at the time, but it started me off on a whole new goal.
