First off make youself a chart, noting date and weight so you can plot a graph to keep tabs on weight loss over a period of time. It's also useful in monitoring the effects of excercise/feed/condition of grass and hay over an extended period of time (I had weight graphs going back over three years for a mare that dropped off or porked out depending on the season!).

I'd weigh once a week and the same time of day, snip off a bit of hair across the withers to help you put the tape on the same place each time.

Please bear in mind that weight taping should be part of a series of checks to monitor overall condition/weight. Look for how thick his/her crest is, how much fat is across the loins and back amongst others. All these factors also depend on the age and breed of your horse! If in doubt speak to your vet for definitive advice.
